I have a Alumacraft Trophy 17 foot boat and i want to get a Minn Kota trolling motor for it what leangth shaft should i get and how many pounds of thrust ? I like to fish for many different types of fish including bass northerns and walleye. I also like to fish on some of the biggest waters in the state.

pikemaster,

if you are looking for a bowmount I would go with a minnkota powerdrive. I really like these trolling motors, they are very easy to operate and I really like the foot pedal for them. as far as thrust and shaft length, I would go with the 65lb thrust and the 60" shaft, that way you will always have enough power and shaft length no matter what the wind conditions are.

Personally I'd do a Powerdrive with Autopilot 24 volt 74# thrust and a 60" shaft. I'd for sure go 24 volt and at least 55# thrust. I you are in real shallow water with a 60" shaft the head of the motor will stick up quite a ways and may inhibit casting in some situations.

What species do you primarily fish? And what type of water (big, small, river) do you fish?

Pikemaster, it really depends on what types of water you are going to fish. IF you are planning on fishing just little puddles (which I doubt with a 17' boat), a 50-55 thrust will be alright. If you are going to be in big water or big rivers, I'd go with a 65 thrust trolling motor. It doesn't hurt to have a little extra thrust for when those winds kick up.

As for shaft size, you'll have to measure the distance to the top of the boat to the water line. That should give you some idea as to what shaft you should be looking for.

I'm trying to remember what I have on my boat, but couldn't tell you right now.
