Is there any line that doesnt freeze up when its cold and windy and be strong enough to catch walleyes and can feel even the littleist of crappie bites? Also is there any bobbers that dont freeze up, i got a couple wooden ones with toothpicks in and they freeze up alot sometimes.

For the bobber ? I would suggest the ice buster bobber. As for the line, I would stick to monafilament line,as it doesn't have the tendency to freeze up as easy as the more sensitive superlines that absorb a little bit of water.

Great advise above.. The ice buster bobber doesn not freeze up as much because the area that goest threw the bobber stays below the surface of the water...

As for line, they all freze up.. florocarbon absorbs the seast amount of water and hence gathers the least ammount of ice.. but they all ice up if in the right temps...

A great picture by Dietz if you haven't seen the ice buster bobbers yet. Simple to use with simple components! Cut the foam according to the weight of your lure, put a bobber tie on and snap on a bobber. Very easy to manage in cold weather. Shouldn't have any problem with it freezin' up and affecting your lure/bait below.

As for line.....what kind of problem are you having wiht freezing up? Where the line connects with the bobber?

If you stay outside long enough, unfortunately you will have the line and most likely the guides that collect ice will freeze up on you. No way getting around it when the temps are below freezing. That goes for any line, mono-flurocarbon-super braids. You'll have to do a 5-10 minute swipe with your hand over your line to get that ice off of it.

PowerPro ice line is a braid, they then put some kind of caoting on it so that it will not absorb water. Its nice, I am still more of a mono guy for ice fishing, but I do think it has its applications! Do not use it on Tip ups however, it can make a mess out of your hands!

Unfortunately this is a phenomenon that industries like otter and fishtrap capitalize on, the only sure way to prevent your line from freezing up is to buy a portable tongue.gif Ice fishing is just like hunting, trapping, or any other activity: once you get into it, you have to drop some money frown.gif Lots of fun once you get a good setup going though.

One thing you might try is burning some charcoal in a coffee can right next to your hole. That'll keep the hole open in weather that would normally freeze it up, and should help keep your line at least somewhat clear of ice.

The only line that will 100% not gather some ice is the line that stays in your tackle box. All line will catch some ice out in the cold, Mother Nature will see to that. Yet some do limit ice development and make ice removal a snap to do. I am a fan of the Power Pro Ice Line and most of my rods have it on.

I rig my rods with PP Ice and then add a GAMMA Frog Hair or a GAMMA Polar Ice ESP fluorocarbon leader to the end. The GAMMA ESP is a much more ice friendly copolymer Fluorocarbon and has a bit of shock absorption built into it.

The GAMMA Frog Hair Ice 100% fluorocarbon is no stretch and stiffer yet much more limber then other FC's I have tested. They both knot well and are east to tie end-to-end with PP Ice Line. The heavier weights of the 100% FC's are super tough stuff and can take a vicious pike hit or two without shearing off.

For walleye on swimming lures like Chubby Darters, Raps, Nills Master Shads and the like, I add a tiny swivel on the top of a 24" ESP FC leader and a fast snap to the bottom. Flash spoons in current also work better with a swiveled leader. This eliminates any twist generated and adds a bit of extra stealth to the rig. I recommend tying up a few leaders ahead of time with swivels and a snap so swapping them out from light to heavy tests is a snap to do.

GAMMA has a new “Cold weather copolymer line” that I am trying out on a couple of rods. Too early to say much on it but it looks like a solid alternative to superbraids for guys who do not like braids on ice. It is flexible and it appears not to ice-up as badly as traditional mono in open air fishing situations. We will see how it holds up after a bit of use and abuse.
