esoxman
Is it legal to pitch a tent on an island of Lake of the Woods? I am entertaining the thought of a week of tenting it on LOTW but don't want to be breaking any Canadian Laws?If someone has tried it before do you have and recommendations or suggestions to a successful adventure? jerkin'm
I believe it is O.K. as long as you have a camping permit for everyone in your group.

Hemlock
$10/day/person available at the MNR here in Kenora (M-F/9-5)Not sure if kids under "X" are free. The gal I spoke to was going to mail me a bunch of stuff. I'll let you know when I find out.
traveler
Hemlock, please do let us know what you find out. Also, is there an MNR office that you know of in FT Francis or Souix narrows? Basically, anywhere on the way up without going all the ay to Kenora? Thanks
jerkin'm
I would think most of the bait shops would have them. Resorts too, as many rent boats on portage in only lakes for campers.
Hemlock
Here's the scoop. MNR mailed me the information packets. It is required for non-residents 18 years of age or older to obtain a permit to camp on crown land in NW Ontario (including Lake of the Woods) Permits are availble at MNR offices and are $10/day/person. Kenora and Fort Frances both have them, I'm unsure about Rainy River. They are also sold through "outside license issuers" (eg. hunting and fishing stores) The area of Lake of the Woods known as Whitefish Bay is out of bounds for non residents to camp on. There are more exceptions to the rule, but most likely do not apply to those looking at a summer fishing/camping trip on Lake of the Woods. (They are more geared to dates during the hunting season, etc) For more information call 807-468-2501 and I'm sure they will answer your questions and/or mail you the literature I'm looking at.
