slick814
Has anyone ever tried vertical jigging with a live bait spinner rig? I've had some decent success at times using one under a bobber on open water when the waves were just right, but never tried it through the ice. Just wondering if someone else has tried it, and to what kind of degree their success was.
mtreno
i messed with some of those thoughts out on the big pond a few years back. at the time it was like a dead sea anyway and the results were the same. something i have not thought of sense then but would be interesting to try again under better fishing. anyone else? CrappieJohn
Years ago I fished the Mississippi River at Lake City, commonly referred to as Lake Pepin, and had some fair luck with the spinner idea. Tried where there was no current though and it was mr.tangles come to visit.
upnorth
slick,I use those whistler type jigs, ya know those ones that have the blade like a propeller on them, they are pretty close to what you would get with a spinner rig, flash and vibration. I have had some pretty good success with them for Walleye. They do bring fish in to look at least and the bite rate is pretty good.
slick814
I'll give a couple of those a try, (Contact US Regarding This Word). I know exactly the ones you're talkin' about. Have to say, I'm still bummed I missed the outing up there, but there wil be others. As far as tangles, etc... with a bit of weight (nice fathead, for example), I would think that the line would stay tight enough not to tangle too badly. I'm tying these with 4 or 6 lb. mono, so a little weight goes a long way... I'm also thinking that maybe a really small blade would give enough flash, but not need the extra flutter that a larger one would. I guess maybe making a downsized rig. shorter length snell, fewer and smaller beads, and one of the smallest blades I've found. Toss on a small red circle hook, and WHAMMO?? upnorth
If you try the inline spinner rig, I would try to get the weight down by the hook that should alleviate some of the tangles.By the way the outing on Big V was fun, but because of the extreme cold we couldn't socialize a whole lot. So it kinda put a little damper on things. Maybe another time when the weather is a little better.
buzbunni
I have tried this with the Mepps Spinflex this year. The Spinflex is a good inline spinner that can be used for cast/straight retrieve, pause/fall, or vertical jigging.Obviously this is a pretty aggressive technique. I like the fact that the thumping blade can help to call in fish from a distance, and the single hook handles a whole minnow well. I have only tried it once this year(and for a short time at that), but I will be giving this a better workout as the season continues.
Deitz Dittrich
I too have tried the spinflex by Mepps. Its worked well for me in open water and have picked up a few fish on it ice fishing as well. Even though I really haven't given it much time in the water during the ice.
