coleman lanterns

msm1018

Question

I have seen lanterns that run on propane cylinders, are they as bright as conventional colemans?? and also I have a coleman that says unleaded 2 in big letters on the side, does that mean I use unleaded gas only?? It was my fathers but he never uses it nor goes icefishing.

msm1018,

I have one the two mantle propane lanterns and love it. It's way easier to deal with than the classic fuel lanterns; no spilling of fuel, no pumping or priming. Just turn the knob and light!

Oh yeah, and they are as bright as the classic lanterns.

TRITC

PS. I had a fuel lantern in the past.

You don't really want to use unleaded gas for vehicles because of the additives, you need to get coleman lantern fuel, I personally would not use it for ice fishin' them little shacks have a hard enough time being vented properly with out burning a hydrocarbon fuel, besides you just can't get that fuel smell off you burned or unburned, good to have around for an emergency though, just my .02 grin.gif

Do you mean the smell from unleaded gas or white gas (coleman gas) or both? I have a dual fuel, and have only used white gas and haven't noticed a smell or residue.

I have a coleman dual fuel and there made to burn coleman fuel and unleaded gas the colemans just a cleaner fuel never had a problem with fumes in the fishhouse. put 12V in the house now man what a difference no more running out of fuel waiting for the latern to cool off braking mantles.

msm, I have a Coleman Northstar Propane lantern and I can't imagine going back to the liquid fuel type. This one is a Large, single mantle, auto ignition, adjustable light level. It is every bit as bright, if not brighter than, any of the double mantle, liquid fuel lanterns that I've had in the past. They also have a steel grid surrounding the globe. That will afford some protection to the globe but the mantles are still as fragile. ALWAYS carry a spare or two. Check out their HSOforum for specs. Phred52

I've been using a dual mantle white fuel lantern for 10 years now qand would want to change. I make sur it is full of fuel before I go on the ice and it last 3-4 hours. It is durable and reliable. No cylinders to mess with either. I did purchase one of the flow caps to attatch to the gas can for easier filling but like I said it does ann excellant job for me

I agree. Coleman fuel only. Unleaded gas plugs up the generator even though they say it is a dual fuel lantern. I found a cool gizmo called a pressuremate on hsolist. It uses a CO2 cartridge and it screws on the gas tank. It keeps the tank charged so you don't have to pump the tank at all. One cartridge last 6-7 hours! wink.gif
