Bleep it!

Brand new Mag 2000, 8" last friday. I read all these threads so I thought I was prepared.

I USED THE COMPRESSION RELEASE - EVERY TIME.

However, the first couple cold pulls on full choke, the engine can pop back before the recoil is all the way back in. The plastic (PLASTIC!?) pawls have all chipped, and one has snapped off. I let Strikemaster know and haven't heard back yet. I understand Jiffy uses the same motor - if SM doesn't stand up for their product, this auger is going back. Which company's don't use the Tecumseh with PLASTIC engagement pawls?

Someone else was having starting issues - this worked for me:

1. 3 or 4 pulls at full choke and it will pop.

2. Go to half choke after the first pop.

3. 2 or 3 pulls at half choke and let it run for a minute

4. Move to "run" and drill away.

I bought a new 10"last year. Dang plastic handles! Throttle flipper broke right away at the mounting pivot. Took it back, got a new one. Saturday, went to start it,(normally about 15 pulls) rope breaks! Take the housing off. (probably voids the warranty) take that all apart, re-tie, put cover back on, pull the cord, breaks AGAIN! Defective nylon?!?!? Should've stuck with my 8 year old 7 inch! First or second pull EVERYTIME! Oh yeah, can't take it back now, been over a year, so now what?!?!?

I just went through the same problem with my new auger. Send them a E-mail or take it to them and they will fix it or pay to have it fixed. It's a warranty item. They sure have had a lot of problems with that switch. Not a very good design. jimmy40.

Their cust service is simply awesome. Before I bought a Lazer last year, I had a MagIII that I had bought 15 years ago. Well I tore the tranny out. I took it all apart, and took the broken parts to Big Lake (SM shop), and they not only GAVE me the parts, but assembled them too at no charge to me. All these problems you folks are having, could all be solved by a phone call, an Email, ro by stopping in at Big Lake. These local based companies dont want people to be unhappy, and start talking smack. They will treat you right.

Strikemaster sent me an email about the plastic recoil pawl. It is a known issue with Tecumseh and I can take it to a warranty center (D-Rock) to have it repaired under warranty.

I think this is a reasonable resolution for Strikemaster, they are doing what they can to take care of the issue. Hopefully Tecumseh doesn't just put the same type of pawl right back in there.

Strikemaster is trying to rectify the problem, I appreciate that.

I'm sure I just got a weaker unit. But one thing's for sure, all I've ever heard is how Strikemaster takes care of their people to make things right. I've heard nothing but good things about their customer service. Have yet to shoot off and email to see if they can help me out. Will do so now though.

My motor runs great, third pull every time. I called them on my problem with the 9" and drilling a hole with in 15 minutes. I took the auger up and they put on the 10" blade for me. Took it out and worked great, drilled 10-15 holes. Last weekend drilled about the same and it seem to take forever. I would have to pick up the auger and push down in order for the blades to catch. Any on else have the same problem???????

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
