Matt Breuer
Well this season has been a good one for perch and a few 'eyes here in Bemidji. But the past few days after the sub-zero temperatures subsided has really turned on the sumos. Many people wait until later in the season to target these big boys, but they are quite congregated this time of year and shouldn't be overlooked. I have been targeting them throughout the day and waiting for the 'eyes right before dark in 28-32'. The best luck we're having has been on small 30' flats adjacent to the shoreline breaks. 1/8 or 5/16 oz. Custom Jigs and Spins Slender Spoons tipped with a shiner head has been working the best. We have been drilling holes in a 30 x 30 foot square and working in opposing directions hopping from hole to hole. Once you drop down and get a fish to hit, stay there until they are gone. Every hole has perch in it, but if I don't get slammed in a minute or so I move to the next hole. Here's a pic of a 12 incher caught today on a Slender Spoon. You can get the Slender Spoon here.
