RTF . . . great report and the pics, well worth a 1000 words! The lake shore looks a lot like it did about a month ago when we got that 10 day run of high temps, so if everything is parallel, the shore should firm up and ditto on the lake ice with the temps the way they are going to be. I'll be cruising by tomorrow and will give a good look. Permanent shanties had to be off NYS waters by the 15th . . . looks like they had enough ice to help them out.

Thanks guys.

I would not put too much into those forecasts Tim. I am 10 miles south west from the lake as the crow flies. We got about 5 to 6 inches of snow last night. The winds are just out of control. It will most likely get to 40 today after the snow moves out, which at this very moment is coming down hard. Tomorrow we will have bright sunny skies but it will be cold. I am just not sure the shore will lock up by saturday AM. If it does, I am there.

Whoa!!!! 5" to 6" of snow now I'm scared. I thought you guys were not supposed to get that much was hoping it was just the 1-3" dump... That powder could throw a wrench in that shoreline or it could tighten up really nice tonight and tomorrow night if we could get a little overcast and shut off the snow machine please! Franky will have a report later today.

Well boys the reports I received are not worth the risk on this lake for the rest of the season. The east side is punky at best so I am not going to risk it. Will get em again next year on the ice and hopefully will have the assemblance of good ice cover that will last and not thaw and rethaw. Been a decent season on this lake and look forward to fishing on it again next season with good friends. Enjoy and Go Cuse!

Tim I am now thinking come monday is a posobility. A cold shot of air is coming down tonight and temps will dip close to the single digits all weekend. The only problem is a good dose of snow might come with it. I know the sun burned off a lot of the snow yesterday because of the ground warmth. We only got a dusting of new snow last night.

Frank actually walked out about 20 yards late yesterday off our access point and thought the ice would be good. I'd chance it but without our trusty ice tester Tank to give us the thumbs up it's 50/50. He's the only guy I know nimble enough to check it. grin.gif

I drove all around the lake and a couple of spots looked like you could walk out with no problem . . . at least it looked that way. The launch ramp looked the same as RTF's pictures, so its holding. The "access" south of the ramp in the trailer area is iffy with the geese and ducks enjoying the about 4 feet of open water . . . maybe a plank could be used. The very south end "in the swamp" is not for me, however if there were a way to get through the woods at the very south south end, it might be done since that area is shaded from the sun and looked like the ice was fully intact. On the West side by the Lake House, the ice was pulled away from the shore but have accessed there before under similar conditions. Further south on the west side there appeared to be several areas that you could get on the ice. Generally speaking, the west shore appeared to be better but the west winds caused the ice to have several cracks that seemed to be pushed together . . . wide sheets of ice, until you get about 50 yds out and then no cracks. There was no snow on top that I could discern and not much around the area. Any areas that have rock on the bottom the ice will be thinner so be advised as to caution. I stopped 20 yds out on the ice since I did not have a spud and really was not dressed to have my foot go into the water if the ice was not good. I would not recommend stepping on a crack for sure. Temps at 2:30 stayed at 29 degrees and was still that when I left about 45 minutes later. Ice fishing decision should be an individual decision and by no means should you attempt to go without someone with you right now. I also recommend the second person have a rope long enough to throw. Check the other sites too.

5 or 6 guys in front of the creek, planked out in 20' to 30' of water., our area is still holding a little bit of snow for dragging. I'll post more reports as I get them... wink.gif Mohawk Valley Joe may meet us for breakfast as well as out on the ice.

Wish I could make it out there with you guys, but my stuff is put away until next year. Now, it is time to get the boat ready and get the long rods out.

Have a safe trip tomorrow and stay smart out there. And catch one for me, Ok grin.gif

Tim: Wasn't able to make the trip this am as I am still having trouble with my shoulder ( torn rc) from a fall a few weeks ago. Seemed to get a little worse this week due to my work schedule. Gotta see a specialist this week and get into a little more detail.Unsure as to the midweek trip?I'll be in touch with you.

Hey Guys,

I just got done changing my third diaper this afternoon, and I couldn't help but think that I wish I was out there with all of you ice fishing. I hope that the fishing was good and the catching was easy!! It is really windy here in Rochester (3:45pm)....

Frank:

I need to sit down with you older guys and hear some tricks of the trade as far as what to tell your significant other when going out ice fishing every weekend. That statement that I used "this will be the last time out" only worked for four straight weeks LOL!

Greg get that shoulder back on track there a pain to deal with I know it creeps up on you like Texas A&M grin.gif

I sent Johnny a picture to post. I would have liked to have taken more pictures but wind conditions prevented it. The shallow bite was slow as I slammed 9 nice hogs a 10" whopper of a bluegill and an 8.5" bluegill. Joe, Tank and Manning were there as well and the bite in deepwater stunk I only caught one hog out there and moved into the shallows with Franky at 10:30 a.m.

Small Custom Jigs and Spins Demon Jigging Spoon did work well for me today. I could have hit double digits on the perch but lost a pig getting the darn transducer out of the hole the water was pretty murky today so they didn't see the flash to well. Joe and Franky each caught a nice bull head and Frank gave me 11 of his perch to fillet, thanks Frank!

Ice was a good 6 to7" and I walked up and down the lake. The shoreline was very good too but Mohawk Valley Joe did get a boot wet in about 1.5' of water. Joe it looked to me like you tried to step on a high spot where the ice pushed up? Care to clarify? The rest of us had no problem getting off the ice. Windy as heck out there but heck will do anything to ice fish just one more time. Wind dumped my trap twice and Tank's at least once. It was making ice when we left and it should be good again tomorrow as well.

Johnny . . . no magic phrases . . .not with a newborn around. Do everything you can and take the time when you are allowed . . .LOL. Typing a little slow tonight as I think I am still thawing out! No trap dumping for me but it did slide and lift a couple of times. Johnny I caught a Northern also that Timmy did not want to mention since it brings up memories of a broken St Croix . . . which this one did not have. Anyone else reading this, remember do not step on the cracks as that is the weakest spots in the ice. Some of the cracks were open water, 4-6 inch gaps and only have a little ice that has frozen and then the snow blew into them disguising the danger. My holes had well over 8 inches of ice and you could hear the ice groaning and crcking all day, so expect a little thicker tomorrow.

It's very tempting right now to just load the truck up and go. It's not light outside yet. But we decided on Friday to call it quits after we went to several places and found no safe ice. After hearing the guys were using planks to get onto Darago, it pretty much sealed the deal for us. Although your ice reports sound good, I don't like the idea of taking a 10 year old kid onto this type of ice for his first year of ice fishing. The cracks Frank described are just too scary and it snowed all night down hear with snow advisory's for all day.

It was fun though and I am glad I found this board. We will wait out for open water for now and catch up on other things.

Do we post open water fishing in this room too ?

Were open year round here RTF we pretty much stick with the Lake posts and post to them year round. Along with the b.s. there are some very interesting and informative posts as well. I try to get out with Tuzzy in the boat on Saturdays during the spring and summers and between coaching my daughters fast-pitch softball team and playing slow pitch two nights a week I'm pretty busy. Fall is reserved for shore fishing walleyes on Oneida, it's an annual pilgramage I have been doing for quite a few years that I enjoy very much. So I look forward to you and the rest of the guys here sharing photo's and fish stories throughout the open water period as well. Feel free to not post your hot spots, I respect areas that you have worked your butt off to learn and figure out. I will also be in the shore fishing forum this fall as well as here. Looking forward to everyones open water experiences as well.
