Fishing limits Daily/possesion

The Chemist

Question

Could someone clarify the regs for me?

Is there a difference? So if you go fishing for a weekend and catch a limit of crappies on one day and then catch another limit the next day? Same would be for walleye. Want to make sure before going out.

Yes thats legal as long as you only take your daily limit each day you are allowed to posses the possesion limit.

Where some guys got burned was they caught their limit in the morning, ate it for lunch then caught a second and got nailed. I would assume alcohol was involved to have drawn that much attention to themselves.

the possesion limit and daily limit are the same with the exception being perch , where the possesion limit is twice the daily limit. So if you go fishing for crappies/walleyes or whatever besides perch for a weekend and you catch a limit the first day you would need to consume or give away the first days limit before you could legally posses another limit the next day.

Hopefully we will be doing alot of CPR this weekend. Just picked up a digital camera yesterday thanks to Huckleberry. What a great deal.

I figured that the limit was 10 crappies/person period. not a 10/20 deal. I think where I got confused was that I thought when I read the story about the guys who most recently got nabbed for over fishing, that it seemed to calculate out to 20/person in possesion.

Thanks for the replies guys. Hopefully Red will be hot. I know that LOW should.

Your possesion limit is just that, your possesion limit.

Your daily limit is your daily limit.

Not one is the other (even if the numbers the same) except for this or that fish. When you fish multiple states it's best to think of it like this because it's different everywhere. MN has not always had the same possesion limit and I doubt they will stay the way they are now forever. Best just to read the regs and follow them.

IceShack,

How could I get in trouble if I caught my limit in the morning, ate the fish for lunch and caught another limit in the evening? If I eat the morning fish, I am no longer in possession of them. I doubt they are going to pump my stomach to get evidence………

I can see your point and when I was younger and would stop and have shore lunch and finish the day with a full limit; that was against the rules and nobody caught me. I was refering to an article I read in Outdoor News (I think) about some guys that got caught. Fact is daily limit is just that whether you get caught or not.

I guess my real point was the daily limit and possesion limit are NOT the same thing. If I catch 10 crappies and eat 4 that night what is my daily limit the next day?

do not make this more complicated than it is. If the daily limit is six and you eat 4 for lunch you can keep 2 more for the day. It is that simple. As far as evidence or proof that is up to the authorities. Just do what you know is right and dont woory about it

Shack,

Good point. They are clearly not always the same.

Legally, you could only keep 4 crappie the next day because you would now be at the legal Possession Limit of 10. The Daily Limit is the max you can keep if you are starting the day with zero (0)in Possession. The Daily and Possession limits work in conjunction and just happen to be the same number for most species in MN. Like someone else indicated, understand the regulations and follow them!

Ice shack, from page 14 of the fising regulations quote: " daily and possesion limits are the SAME unless otherwise noted. Fish are in a anglers possesion whether on hand in cold storage in transport or elsewhare."
