Crappiechaser
What are your opinions on the best jigs to use for Crappies?
CrappieJohn
The good news: you were wise enough to say "jigs". The bad news: way to many to just pick the "best". There will never be a right answer to this....kinda like having the girl friend ask if you think she is perfect proportionally, if you get my drift. You'll get a ton of the "best" answers I'm sure. efgh
I don;t think I would touch that question with a 10 ft. pole, A few years ago I was catching croppies with a long shank lady bug with 3/4 in. piece of a white twister tail and a fat head, tore the body of fat head off, just used the head, told 3 friends this, they accused me of fibbing about using this because they never caught a thing. Fishing for any fish , I thik is govern by, location and presentation.
Crappiechaser
Ok I understand, let me reword the question. What would be a good jig to start useing first to see if the fish want it. Ive been haveing good luck on the forage minnow minis but what if they turn one day and dont like that. I need a back up. Thanks.
Matt Breuer
The key is to get baits that give you different presentations. I would pick up something horizontal like a Ratfinkee or Ratso, something vertical like a Demon, something that falls slow, and something that gets down quickly. I would also get a bunch of colors and sizes, anything from a size 12 up to a size 4. If you cover these baits you shouldn't ever run into a problem. The bait isn't the complete key, it's the presentation like efgh said. Hope that helps!
CrappieJohn
CChaser....Serious now, ok? As Matt has stated, you need to have a few different tools to fall back on. You have basically two styles of jigs to present: vertical and horizontal. You may find that the horizontal jigs will give way to vertcal jigs and then go back again, so you need to have a few varieties of each of those, in different sizes and colors. The vertical jigs will likely be productive using anthing from a minnow to a grub or even some artificial baits. A Jrs Glo Drop is a good example. The horizontal lures will not do well with minnows, but will smoke fish with the addition of whip-like plastics. Jrs Tackle offers the punkinseed bait in a wide variety of sizes and colors ...some, such as the shrimpo or ratso from custom jigs/spins come with the plastic tail. Presentation is everything. Along whith the jig comes how you work it. Tons of different approaches to this aspect of the equation and they are mainly provided with each individual's personal touch...no two people will do exactly the same thing to get baits to work. But....everybody does seem to find that "magic" as I call it. More important than tackle though, is to keep and open mind and an active imagination. Remember...what started as a two-wheeled conveyance known as the bicycle in the mid 1800's was the foundation today's Harley. Fishing is not any different.
