Most informative muskie books?

Scoot

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a list of three or four muskie books that will be the most informative. I fish LOW some and will definitely read Muskies on the Shield. What other books would be of interest to me? Keep in mind- I'm not looking for story time, I'd like books that are information based to help arm me with knowledge for knowing where and when to be for next years sklunge adventures.

Check these out: wink.gif

1. Crankbait Secrets by Joe Bucher

2. The complete Guide to Musky Hunting by Jim Saric and Steve Heiting.

Also just finished reading Pearson's Muskies on the Shield this past fall...lots of good info...you will enjoy it.

Thanks Cliffy. Anybody got a used copy of Muskies on the Shield or The Complete Guide to Muskie Hunting they'd like to part with? People seem to like to hang onto these used books, but very seldom ever read or even look at them again.

Scoot:

I have both books but a buddy has them. I will visit with him tonight and see which one he is not reading..and I would be more then happy to loan it to ya. I live just across the river..so it would be easy. I will post which book I can get ya tomorrow on this forum...and we can make arrangements to get it to ya. grin.gif

Cool- how can I pass up a deal like that!?! Thanks a lot.

I haven't updated my bio yet, but I actually live on the "right" side of the river now too. Feels good to be Minnesotan again!!! Not starting a ND bashing here, I just grew up in MN and always felt like that's where I belonged.

Glad to hear you live on the right side! smile.gif Anyways, I called my Buddy and he is finished with "the complete guide..etc.". As a matter of fact, he just dropped it off at my office. You can call me on my cell (701) 866-9038 and I can either drop it off..or whatever you feel comfortable with.... grin.gif

Hiya,

Couple suggestions...

My personal bias on this one is pretty intense laugh.gif, but 'Muskies on the Shield' is about as good as it gets I think.

Another good one is 'Muskies Maina Style.' It's pretty far-ranging in subject matter, and Pete rambles once in a while as only Pete can do (I should know...) but there's some very good prectical info in there on open water fish, triggering fish, trolling techniques, etc.

Another one that's a little off the wall as a suggestion I suppose: The In-Fisherman's 'Secret Teachings.' I think it's been published under various titles off and on for years, but basically it's a thorough treatment of the F+L+P system, calendar periods, lake classification, etc. If you read it and use it - really apply it - you will catch more fish. Period.

You should also go through all your old In-Fisherman back issues and read anything Gord Pyzer's ever written, whether it's about muskies or not. You'll learn something for sure.

Read Moby Dick too. We all have a little Ahab in us.

Scoot & Cliffy - you two should come over to the FM Muskies Inc chapter meeting on the 24th. I'll be up there...

Cheers,

RK

Thanks for the info RK. I read Pete Maina's "Muskies Suck" but have have not read the one you refered to. I will have to check it out.

I have always thought about joining the local MI chapter..I even tried sending an e-mail to the FM chapter president...but it my e-mail stated his address was no longer active or couldnt be delivered..or whatever. I will have to look at joining again..it would be nice to meet more people that share this sickness. tongue.gif

Thanks for the info, RK. I'll try sneak over to the meeting, but I'm not sure if I can swing it or not. We've got a pretty fresh baby at home and I'm trying really hard not to leave mama at home alone with the little guy too often. I'll check out those books you mentioned- winters already getting long for me. I just finished a pretty deep book (Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance) and I'm need for something light and fun that won't make my brain work too hard.

Cliffy, what's your e-mail addy? I'll shoot you Brett's e-mail address. I've talked with him a number of times now- sure seems like a nice fella. I'll probably end up joining Muskies Inc. in the near future.

If you could send me his e-mail to [email protected] that would be great. grin.gif I get his e-mail off of the MI HSOforum and tried sending him another message this AM but it still would not go through...I might just call him instead..but still send me what you have.

Thanks.

Scoot & Cliffy -

You should both join the FM MI chapter... I get to go to visit a lot of chapters, and they're one of the best. A lot of very good anglers and, more importantly, very good people. I've made some good friends in that chapter over the years. Cliffy, I think you probably tried to email John Skarie's old email address. Scoot can get you Brett's (he's the current Pres.) or email me and I'll get it to you.

Scoot - I get it with the kids, believe me. At home with a sick one today... If you're looking for reading material, go find "The Longest Silence" by Thomas McGuane. Not about muskies, but the best fishing book I think I've ever read...

Cheers,

RK

Thanks RK. The e-mail address I was sending to is [email protected] and for whatever reason, it keeps coming back as undeliverable. If that is the right address..perhaps there is an issue with my IP. I may just call the number listed on the MI web-site. I probably would join..just would like to talk to a couple of members first...get a feel for the situation..etc. Thanks. smile.gif

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
