Question for the LX-3 Users

cliffy

Question

I was thinking of buying a LX-3 and had a question for those that already own one. How do you store it or transport it?

I currently own a Vex fl-18 and it fits perfectly in a 5 gallon pail. I was just at Scheels and was playing around witht the Marcum and noticed it would not fit in a 5 gallon bucket..unless it was tipped up on its side. I was curious if transporting the Marcum tipped up on its side in a 5 gallon bucket could harm anything. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Oh, one more thing. Do most of you keep the cable running through the holder/arm like deal or to you take that off and just use a float on the cable? Thanks.

Cliffy, I just transport mine as it is. I just put it from my truck into my shack, fish, then put it back in my truck when I get to the ramp. However, I have put it in a 5 gallon bucket before without any problems. I also use the cable support that it comes with. If you usually fish on the left side of your shack and want the cable on the right side or vice-versa, you can easly change it. Good fishing.

Thanks for the info:

I called out to the store and they put my new LX-3 on the side..I will be picking it up later tonight. I am looking forward to comparing it to my FL-18 this weekend.

The reason I asked the question is because I do 99% of my fishing out of my portable..and tow my portable many miles per year. The nice thing about the vex is that I could put it into a bucket along with some other misc. gear such as gloves, hat, toilet paper etc and it stores very neatly. I put these items on the bottom so the vex has a nice soft ride.

I guess I was concerned that storing the LX-3 on its side in a bucket being towed accross the lake could be harmful to the unit. I suppose it could be stored upside down as long as its well supported and does not get bounced around to much............thanks.

What I use is the blue box, I am sure you seen them around it's by Dave Gentz, the Battery is stored in the rear opening the bracket fits right on top, the swing out arm swings right into the hole, I like mine, Hope this helps

Well, I picked my LX-3 last night…I will be using it for the first time tomorrow. I plan on doing a comparison with my FL-18. I hope to post my observations later next week. A kinda average Joe’s point of view on the two machines.

I check and rechecked and the LX-3 will only fit in a five-gallon bucket if it is inserted on its side. I used a block of my wife’s green soft Styrofoam…(you know the stuff people put into flower pots when they make fake flower arrangements. It looks like green Styrofoam but is a lot squishier.) I formed it to the shape of the machine on its side and it holds it just fine. That should protect it from any rough rides across the lake.

Cliffy, I too am the proud new owner of an LX 3. I was all set with the egg crate styrofoam and five gallon bucket, but was not happy with that set up. I too fish out of a portable and encounter many miles of riding on lake of the woods. I'm keeping mine in my backpack at this point and I've been pretty happy with that.

Wow hemlock, you live in kenora? What a heck of a place to live!

I don't think I could work with all that great fishing around.

Yup, I got to find a better way of transporting my LX-3. I was all proud of my new system until my wife pointed out that the green stryofoam is made to hold water. I tested it and yes, just like a sponge. Back to the drawing board.... confused.gifconfused.gifconfused.gifconfused.gifcrazy.gif

Cliffy, I picked up a small dish basket from wal-mart,about 3$,its made by sterilite and measures 15 7/8" x12 7/8" x 6" (luckily the sticker is still on it! cool.gif)The 12 7/8" width is perfect for my marcum.I use the extra room in the basket to hold an extra lx3 battery for my lights. This basket fits perfect in the rear corner of my sled to.I attached it with 2 bolts on each side of the sled.

I then used an old couch cushion to line the bottom of the basket.I cut out a section of the cushion where my lx3 goes, leaving about 2-3" of foam under the lx3.I then cut a hole in the rest of the foam where the xtra battery goes,so it fits nice and snug then secured it with a velcro strap. The cushion looks like an L on its side when done.

This works great for me.It was cheap, easy, light, and I dont have to worry about my investment getting beat up on the haul.

Cliffy,

I am curious to hear about your test of your new unit compared the Vexilar. I know they are both awesome units but just curious what you thought from someone who has both units and is not paid to promote one. I am on the ropes on which one to replace my colorpoint with.

DRH:

I am going to give both units a good workout this weekend...I probably will have enough usage to give my thoughts on each machine by Monday. I am just an average joe with no ties to either company...I was just curious myself about what everyone was saying about these machines.... I will post on this forum. Check back then. Thanks. grin.gifgrin.gif
