0 Ed Carlson
No accessory that I know of aids the re-drilling of a hole with a Mora hand auger?Re-drilling a hole is tough on any shaver style ice auger, and especially tough with a shaver hand auger. They catch and bind on the uneven surface ice resulting in premature dulling of the blades. The narrowing of the circumference of the entire radius of the hole further binds up the hand auger and wears on the outer cutting surface. Opening up old holes is just plain tough on shaver blades and on the user.Whenever possible it is best to drill new. If the old hole is just partially capped off with ice a ice chisel/bar is more effective to reopen the hole and you can also widen out the top that way. 0 Surface Tension
I'd drill a new hole too unless your have a perm shack. A chisel works for a while but found that the bottom of the hole freeze too. Before I had a power auger I kept a spoon auger in the shack to re-drill the holes which worked better then the Mora. 0 vikingmeatwad
Thanks for the info guys, this sucks that I will have to borrow my old mans auger when going out to his permanent. Thanks again and good luck!
0 shorefisher
Surface Tension said it first but I to used a spoon auger to re-open old holes. They work well for this and you can find used one's very cheap. Even though I have a power auger I still keep the old spoon in the fish house just in case. 0 BackHerUp
What's a "spoon" auger and what does it look like?
0 swampman
You dont see the swedish spoon at all anymore after the mora first came out everybody pretty much got rid of these things. the handle was basically the same as current hand helds but the blade was shaped kind of like a football kneepad. I know that sounds dumb. they did work good for opening old holes though as long as there wasnt to much ice
0 fishin789
When all I had was a hand auger,I would redrill untill it frist broke through then i would use my ice spud to finish open the rest of the hole. Now i have a power auger so reopening holes isn't a problem now. 0 Old School
I'm assuming you are talking about the blue Mora hand augers.Mora use to make guide plates for the hand auger to reopen holes with out dulling the blades. They were also on the electric auger from the factory. A buddy of mine has a 6" Mora hand auger and the guide plates only went down to 7", so we tweaked & cut & adjusted the 7" ones to fit. Same blades are on it since the guides have been on it and thats been many, many, many moons ago. I have not seen them for sometime now, since the new style of hand augers came out.A person could check bait shops (that have been open forever) and ask if they have any guide plates laying around.Just a thought and hope this helps.
