Ice is never safe no matter how thick it is. Both times I tested the floating ability of my truck was on 18+" of ice on each side of the hole. By the way...trucks just don't float and the water is cold.

Me personally 10" for my f-150 and 8" for my ranger if I know the lake real well. Must pay attention to the rest of the coditions also. Last yr. on 12" I dropped mine in. Went into some snow which turned out to be 12" of snow/slush on 6" of ice. Dropped it in only up to the bumpers. Believe me it's not real easy to find someone to drive out and give you a tug. confused.gif Lucky for me a friend had rolled his toyota 4x4 couple months earlier and didn't much care. Couple dozen yanks and tree tow straps later we had it out.

My advice is different than what I practice. Wait for 14"

I agree with psegriz. I used to ice race cars up until 5 years ago... On some of the more mild winters we would race on 12". Obviously, you have to know that body of water and be confident that the ice thickness is uniform. smirk.gif
