Please - simple directions to post a avatar

Can anyone please provide some simple directions on how to get the picture ( is it called an avatar?? ) that can be posted by your name. I am not too bad when it comes to getting around the computer - but I have no idea on how to do this :-( Please keep directions simple - I appreciate any help!! Is there a way to use a picture that I have on a CDROM that was developed at Ritz camera etc...
