How long until deer return to normal patterns?

I missed a large buck on Sunday evening does anyone have any thoughts on how long it takes for a spooked deer to return to its normal activities? I am the only person that has permision to hunt a rather large tract of land so as long as the deer stays on the property it should make it through the rifle season.

He will do one of two things usually, go noctournal until the season ends, or he will go right back to normal like nothing happened after a day or two, sometimes right away. I have seen both unfold. Wait a day or two and go back and see where everthing is at.

The interesting this was that this buck did not act like it was in rut. It was not acting stupid or interested in any of the scent I had out (that I could tell). It took about 40 minutes for the deer to travel 50 yards. I do not think that I have ever been that still for that long. I just kept wishing I had my rifle and not my bow. Oh well I have until the end of the year to get him.

Mr. B,

You'll probably get as many answers to this as their are possibilities, but...heregoes..

If the buck isn't being pressured by other hunters, then he will probably go back to his "normal" routine within a day or two. He will most likely use his same bedding area and will feed in the same general area as he did before, but he may not be traveling the same route that you saw him on. He might abandon that route for another that offers more cover.

The thing that may screw up this theory is the rut. As others have mentioned, the rut will cause him to change his habits. If there are does already there, then he will probably return to his same bedding area each night until he gets on the trail of a hot doe. Then he will follow her until he has a chance to breed her.

If it were me, I would abandon that stand site until after the rut is over. Change locations but stay in the same area. Search for other bedding-feeding routes and be darn quiet when you're setting up and traveling to and from your stand. A buck that is spooked once will not always abandon the area, but he probably has a heightened paranoia. One that is spooked twice might leave for good, though.

Good luck!!

Here's the other thing, did he even know there was a hunter there or did he just hear something hit a branch or the ground, or just whiz past him? If it was primarily just a strange noise, it probably won't affect him much. If he saw you & knew you were a person, you might need to move to somewhere nearby. With no other hunter pressure close by, I would expect he'll act pretty much the same. He quite likely doesn't know it's hunting season yet.

From what I can tell he never knew I was there. He was up wind of me, facing away. I do not think he knew anything was wrong until he heard the arrow smack in to the oak tree. If the wind is right I think I am going to give it a try from the stand this weekend.

I have missed deer bowhunting, if the deer doesn't snort wheeze, or show signs that he had seen me, I would be back up in the stand. If he figured out you where there, (like you got of the stand and pushed him away) he will change his pattern.

I missed a doe one time, that just plain moved right as I released, I think she heard the arrow, but I'm not positive of that. She left my sight, I grabbed the grunt call, pulled her back in, & smoked her. She still had no idea there was a person there.

Sounds to me like going back to the spot's the right thing to do.

I would hunt they same stand...sounds like it has no clue what it was. I missed a doe 2 years ago and then shot her 2 days later out of the same stand at almost the same time of day. It didn't appear that she changed her habits any. Now, had he spooked and worked his way around to get a whif of you...then I would set up in a different tree. I had that happen one time, I moved my stand about 40 yards away. The buck came from the same area a week later and stopped about 60 yards from the old stand location and looked up and around...sniffing. He knew I should have been there...I didn't ever get another shot on him, but I wasn't busted either. Good Luck and stay positive...if it is meant to be...it will be!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
