Smoking Yamaha

cartfan

Question

I have an 03 Yamaha 115 that is new this year. The engine has started to smoke a little in the last couple of months. It only seems to happen after restarts when it's warmed up. Are other people with this motor experiencing the same thing?

Smoking 4-stroke is bad.

Could be a lot of things......some kinda expensive, some very expensive.

If you have an '03, then the factory warranty should still cover the motor.

One of the issues I've heard with the 115 is from valve seating problems which could be the case here.

I have also heard of several people including myself that have occasionally smelled gas in the crankcase. After changing my oil, the smell hasn't returned. I can imagine that if fuel is in the crankcase, then oil could get in the cylinder.....causing smoke.

I would get her in and have the dealer diagnose it since it should be under warranty. The smoke can either be from combusting oil as explained above or it could be from incomplete combustion of the gasoline caused by timing or a bad plug or any number of things. It may not seem like a big deal to get it fixed, but you could be doing some internal damage depending on the cause.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.
