Snow conditions at LOW

Recommended Posts

We rode sleds out to Hay and beyond last weekend from Stevens Bay. Some slush, some quite heavy west of Hay.

The slush in Stevens was not too bad, but that was a weeke ago.

I saw one truck attempt to drive on the lake, and he ended up dropping through the snow ice layer to his frame. It looked like he was not having too much fun.

I would think sleds will be the best mode of travel yet.

Curious about snow conditions on LOW in the Morson to Nester Falls area. We were on snowmobile trails last weekend and there was plenty of snow. We are coming up this weekend and I'm curious about conditions on the lake. We would be riding snowmobiles though the weather doesn't sound condusive to that. Can we still get to Hay Island and Miles Bay leaving from the Government Landing area or will we spend a lot of time stuck in slush? Is there even a remote chance of driving trucks out?

Thanks for the help!

was up in the Miles bay area on the 18th and we got there on sleds and it was good going then but since we got this rain and warm weather its a different story. I was out fishing this past saturday just out of Morson there was people out there with their pickups but you couldnt go just anywhere. We seen that first hand when a guy got stuck. There was a little water and some snow left so running around on the sleds was ideal however it's cooler now and you know what that means. There is still some slush out there, I ran into some and there was few inches of ice and then about 6-8 inches of water then the ice again. By the way fishing for crappies in miles bay was excellent. Even got a few walleyes, tulibees and some nice perch. Most people were fishing west of the Thompson creek area. Just do what most people did, they would cruise on by and turn around and fish by us. That didnt bother me though. I wouldnt even bother going to hay island. Dont know what to recommend atv or sled. Or if you can drive up there. My dad lives up there and he hasnt been out for a few days. Hope this helps and good luck fishing! Brian

Thanks Brian! Good information. We will be taking 4-wheelers with us. We will be staying at Buena Vista resort. It is a beautiful area up there. We have had excellent luck ice fishing in Miles bay in the past. We also like to take an evening and spend back on Arrow Lake. Unbelievable walleye fishing! Where abouts do you fish out of Morson? For crappies? Thanks again. Scott.

We weren't too far from Buena Vista. In fact I was going to go get some minnows from Buena vista but I couldnt get close because of the deep water. Most of it was right there in front of the resort. We were only about 1.5 miles from the resort around the corner just before the gap by Mylie's out of the wind. It was really windy the other day. Got a few walleyes there. My dad quit going to Arrow lake because he found that the walleyes had these growths on their skins. Its always been good fishing there and even seen some nice perch come out of there. One thing you might want to watch for is moving water in some of the creek on the way into Arrow. I seen some pretty deep water in there this time of year going into Arrow. We were in a walleye derby the other day thats why we were fishing so close to mainland. Other wise we would have further out and we really dont have to go all that far for some decent walleye fishing. Might be a few days before I get up there again I head back to work Wednesday night. I drive for Marvins so I wont be home til Sunday sometime. Good luck fishing and let me know how ya do. I'll check in when I get back! Brian

Thanks again Brian. I hope we will be able to get around on wheelers. From what I heard all of the snow pretty much went with all of rain last weekend. As far as getting to Arrow lake I can't really explain it without a map in front of me. I can find it on the lake though.
Daryl, we will be leaving early on Friday morning. I will try to get a hold of you if there are problems. Are you staying at your place or the resort? Later.

Just talked with my dad and he was up in miles bay yesterday. He drove his pickup out there but he said there was a lot of slush holes but he made it up there. He did pretty good and the weather was beautiful. I forgot to ask him what he would recommend a sled or wheeler. I would think the hifax on the sled wouldn't last long. I was running out there the other day and there was alot of places with nothing on top but then again I run with studs. And if its cool in the morning when you go out the stuff on top will be hard. I left my sled up at my dads and will bring the wheeler with me the next time i go out. I wouldnt try to go out from Buena vista with the pickup if you want to drive out because that is where I ran into the deep water and most of it was there right along front the resort. We have been going out from Mylie's or the gov't landing. We pulled a car out of the lake right in front of Buena Vista quite a few years. It was right beside their boat launch. Hope you find the crappies up there I am sure you will. My dad might be out there on the weekend he drives green/gray dodge. I doubt I'll be up there this weekend cuz i get back sunday and might not be home too long. Right before you get to the creek area in Miles bay look to the west and you will see, there will most likely be some people there fishing and anyways that's where we have been going. Have fun and look forward to a good report! Brian

Benelli- thanks for the report.
Scott- We are staying at Tiedemanns' cabin on Little Grassie but will probably go to the gov't landing to get on the lake. We are taking wheelers and traveling light. Looks like great weather for the weekend. See you guys out at Miles on Saturday. It is almost scary when I know most of the people posting this site. Is that good or bad?

Just reporting back on last weekend. Fishing was good. We fished several spots up in Miles bay and caught fish every where we tried. Lots of crappies, perch, tullibee, and some walleyes. We went back to Arrow on Friday night and that was an adventure. Very tough going on the wheelers. We spent most of our time pushing or pulling someone out of the snow. We found some slush, but there was no snow on the lake, so 4-wheelers are the way to go.

Yes we did go into Arrow. We got in there at around 4:30 and caught a few walleyes and a northern right away, but then we decided we might want to get back to the big lake before it got dark. It is only about a 4 mile trail into the lake, but it took us an hour to make it out.

Scotty I'm happy to hear that fishing was good for you and that I was right about the wheelers. I know the ice went to dump in a hurry and I never did make it back up there. Wierd one weekend we were driving our pickups/SUV or whatever and the next weekend my dad was out on his snowmobile and he had to watch for open water. But before we know we will be in a boat again.
