czl99
I am planning on going on a fishing trip to Eagle Lake between Kenora and Dryen. I was wondering if anybody has ever fished the lake before and if it is any good.
russ
czl99,Fished there 2 years ago. Many big walleyes, released because of slot limit. Not as many eaters but enough for a fishfry each nite for our party of 5. (walleyes) Stayed at Cedar Point Lodge. GPS is recommended, very large water with many islands.Good Luck
firfyter
I have been going to Eagle for a few years. It is a great fishing lake. Unlike the other reply I have found there to be many eater size eyes. Good Northern fishing if you know where to find them. Last year caught 37in Nort. Largest eye was 25 inches. Could give the name of a great resort if you don't have one picked out.
czl99
firfyter,Could you give me the name of the resort that you went to and if it was worth the money that you paid.
firfyter
The name of the resort is Pine Beach Lodge. I really like it my family has been going there for about 30 years. Their only downfall is expensive bait, so we just buy about 12 dozen when we cross the border. The cabin are kind of old but they do just fine. It is ran by a older lady named Helen, and her grandson Rick. He fills your gas, cleans your fish, he'll evan start your boat for you if you want him to. Let me know if you choose that resort. I can give you more info.[This message has been edited by Rick (edited 01-28-2004).]
MuskyBrian
I have fished Eagle Lake along with many other lakes in the area. Unless this is trip for Musky, I would highly advise you to go elsewhere. I know of lakes only 30-40 Mins north of Eagle with MUCH better action on all species. There are lots of resorts oN Eagle, and it can be a diffcult lake to fish. I would go to any of the reosrts on the "Red Lake Highway" before I went to Eagle. Guest
Hi.I also want to stay near Eagle Lake. Am considering Stanley's resort on something called the West Arm. Is this just a small bay or outlet of Eagle Lake? Any comments on the resort or Northern fishing near there? Thanks,Mike
Guest
Bump...Does anyone have opinions on west arm of Eagle Lake and resorts? Mid-July?Thanks,Mike
MuskyBrian
All I can tell you is this..When we stayed at Eagle we stayed at Deer Trail Lodge. It is not the "West Arm" but it also isn't that far off either. We took out a guide for 2 days, between 3 of us AND the Guide, we boated 3 walleyes in 2 full days of fishing. This was in July also. I know people who do very well On Eagle(or say they do at least). I guess it depends what species you are targeting. One of the few bright spots of our trip were some big Northerns boated and also some Musky sightings.
Guest
Thanks. Walleye are great but I would rather catch Northern all day hoping for a luck Muskie catch. I am guessing that Pike should be pretty good if in the right place?Mike
Swamp Scooter
I have spoken with the owner Steve, at Kimberley's on the West end of Eagle. He has cabins and openings as far as I know. I was next to him at a Sports Show recently. Lots of places to go.[email protected] if you want specifics
MuskyBrian
I guess it depends if you want size or action. Obviously a Lake of Eagles size is going to hold some big Northern. I know for a fact however there are better lakes in the area that will provide a lot better action and give more of the "Canadian Fishing" experience. firfyter
Mike, There is some great Northern fishing on Eagle. I'm not sure where the resort is that you are staying at, but if you are going, I could E-Mail you some locations that are about a 20 Minute boat ride from the enterance of the West Arm. I have only fished the lake as late a June, but it would be a good starting point for you.
Guest
Thanks Firfytr,Any advice or spots can help. The place I am planning on 7 miles or so west of the town Vermillion Bay north side of this west arm area. Action is just fine as I am sure Eagle has many pike larger than my biggest so far.Mike
firfyter
Mike, I just looked at a map of where the resort you are staying at is. I was quite a bit off on how far you are going to be from the locations I am custom of fishing. Where I go is kind of centraly located on the lake. I would still be willing to give you some info but I will warn you that some of the locations would be a hour to a hour and a half, if not more. Just for referece if you have a map look for Muskeg Bay, Three Sisters Islands, Blind Bay. Three Sisters would be my first choice for you, but I would bet that would be a very long trip for you. Are you bring your own boat? If not I would suggest that you rent the largest boat and motor combo they have available. Again, I will still give you some Northern spots to fish, I just don't know how far you want to travel by boat.
Guest
Thanks,I do not think my first plan will be to go too far. I will rent as boat 40hp rather than tow. I have some guiding in my package so it should get me going.By the way, I like to fish in line spinners more than spoons. Any opinion or recommendation on color up there on either?Mike

firfyter
Mike, In the past we tend to do better with either a silver or gold blades. But also some of the bigger pike have came from trolling both Red Eyes, and Larger 8in Rapalas (Silver bottom and Black Top)

TomBow
We are going up again in mid-June this year. Last year, we found a good spot, marked alot of fish and spent a good time trolling Black and Silver Rapala Huskies and Fire Tiger Smithwick Rogues. The Rogues were hotter, slightly, compared to the Rapala's but both did very well. Caught good numbers of eaters, largest walleye was 27" (released) and largest northern was 31.5" (released), my wife's biggest! The water was pretty low this year but they have had good snowfall so hopefully the water will be up.We have only been up twice and did better on pike the first year, fishing south of Strawberry Island, dragging hammered brass spinner rigs and minnows. If anyone is willing to share info, please e-mail be at: [email protected]. Looking for more northerns and some bass.I did hear from a local "First Nations" person, that there is typically better fishing north of Vermilion Bay. Best of Luck to all!!
