I agree with Clancy.....

It never fails every year when the bowhunting starts to get real hot, they open the woods to every rifle in Minnesota. I do rifle hunt too but I want to spend those days in the woods with my bow. Kind of depressing. I work so hard all year and put in so many hours and when the woods really wake up some guy that has hunted the same stand for 10 years come out opening morning and pops that buck i've been playing hide and seek with for two years! I would love a later season!

I would have to disagree with you BLACKJACK...I don't know anyone who hunts the rifle that lets the weather dictate the season. I would guess that for about 80% of hunters in MN it's tradition. Same deer camps, same people, etc. You better believe that me and my party will be out there rain or snow, -10 or 70 degrees.

Reason the season must stay the same is easy for 7o% of the state..except for the north eastern 1/4 of the state deer season and crops play a major role..open the season any early way to many crops up...open the season later most of the deer head to wintering grounds..lots of years 30% of the state has that problem alredy the deer are in non hunting areas come second season..

So by puting a 4 point on 1 side except for 12-16 and over 55 any deer should be allowed..this would make all the difference in the world..sure you would have the morons who would shoot and look for 4 after the fact but make the penalty so severe people would think twice about pulling that triger on a 6 point..

once we got are big bucks back into play raise the non resident tags up a couple hundred and use this money for habitat..

bigbucks, I agree with you, time and education will help hunters realize that they have to let some of the small bucks go in order to shoot a big buck. Also, with CWD just across the border, we need to keep harvesting a substantial number of deer so WHEN it does show up in MN, its easier to contain.

Mayfly, the hardcore hunters on this site (and in your camp) may not let the weather dictate what they do, but for any young or novice or 'not as committed' hunter, cold and wet will determine how much time they spend on the stand and in the woods. The hardcore hunters have the heavy insulated boots, insulated clothes, another coverall, good gloves, good raingear, good walking boots that allow them to stay out longer. I know when I go bowhunting in Dec, it gets to be more of an endurance contest, can I dress warm enough to sit in my stand (I've been lusting after one of those 'Heater Body suits, but haven't pulled the trigger yet). And it sure is a lot easer getting out in Dec for an evening hunt at 15 degrees then it is in the morning at zero! But the DNR hasn't proposed changing the season - yet - so no sense in argueing about it. smile.gif

May as well pipe in with my .02.

I agree w/eyesontonka a 4 pt. min. by four pt. I'm meaning 4 per side. or a 16" spread. I'd more so like the 16" spread. The reason for this being that in my area lots of 1 1/2 old bucks are 4 pt. but are so small they are like baskets. The exception to this would be someone who has not shot a buck b4.

I worked in ND last yr and it was unbelievable how many nice bucks (4x4 w/16" plus spread and bigger) were brought into register each day. The town was only 260 pop. I found out why Kids were socially allowed to shoot smaller ones but never did. A man I'm guessing in his mid fifties on the last day of season brought in a 3x3 and a really nice one acording to MN standards. The guy got so much grief from locals that he actually broke into tears. I kinda felt sorry for him. Probably why they have nice bucks is because it's socially unacceptable to shoot lesser deer.

I don't agree w/making laws on what a person can take and can't take. Can't say I agree with formentioned either.

I would agree w/putting a complete halt to the taking of bucks for 4 yrs. Then put our current laws into place the only exception being that buck permits would be offered on a permit basis only, your lisence would be good for a doe.

I know lots would disagree w/me but it's just my opinion.
