Waubay Area FMers Duck ?

Recommended Posts

I have heard from quite a few people that there is a large number of ducks(including divers) in that area right now. Is there any truth to this. I have heard it second hand for long enough, I am dying to know the truth. I really want a fresh supply of birds after the cold spell we are going to get.

Drove through there on Highway 12 on October 3, late afternoon. Lots of waterfowl visible from the road - including zillions of coots, shovelers, mallards, wigeon, and some divers. It was sunny with a high wind, and the birds were stacked up on the lee sides of the lake, including along the south side of the highway causeway.

Talked to a friend who lives about 20 miles north of there a couple of days ago, and he tells me numbers are still pretty low - but he expects things to pick up a bit with the cooler weather.

The areas I normally hunt around the webster/ waubay area have fewer ducks yet than hoped for. Although i have found a couple of honeyhole where there have been sloughs covered with honkers, mallards, teal, and a few gads and wigeons. if ya can find em and are able to get on the land theres plenty to shoot or at least shoot at. The weathers supposed to cooling down and may start bringing down some new birds.

Mike, Sloughshark,

I was out there fishing this past Saturday. We saw a lot of geese, some divers, quite a few mallards and gadwall. It was really windy, and we were fishing the windy side of Waubay but we still saw birds. Shoot me an email if you want some more detail on smaller spots/honeyholes I saw.

I found some sloughs around the hazel, naples, and vienna areas last weekend while pheasant hunting that were nothing short of having ducks on top of ducks. Was able to gain permission for one area. Looked like a variety of ducks but mostly mallards and a good fistful of pintails. I think were gonna give 'er' hell this weekend, let ya know how we did.
