MNCPRGUY
Looking for opinions on 1-man shelters. I definately want a thermal top and have it narrowed down to two shelters. The Fish Trap Pro weighs 7 lbs more than the Jason Mitchell Pro. Where does that estra weight come from and does the JM weight include the battery bracket and other bells & whistles? Crappyfisherman
I think that is a misprint on the weight. The Pro is a thermo top the Jason Mitchell is a full thermo with lights and a battery tray. They are the same size and same poles and sleds.I could be wrong but to me that would make the JM 7lbs heavier.
Jim Uran
Dont forget about a scout tc, no worries about extendable poles. just flip and fish!!

Perhaps we could get someone from Clam to "weigh" in on the matter. :-)
Jim Kusuda
I have a Pro TC and enjoy the way it fishes off the side of the same sled base as the Scout TC for added width. My pole system works well and once extended, I usually am able to make small moves with the top up in the "wind block" position.
fishinfey8
The jason mitchell also comes with a bait bucket and a bait bucket mounting bracket.
Rod Woten
I run with either a Scout, a Trapper or a Big Mouth. To me, the biggest advantage all 3 of these shelters is the rigid poles...no need to extend or retract, just flip & fish. The Trapper is made entirely from standard non-thermal fabric while the Scout comes standard with a thermal cap. The Big Mouth is available in either standard uninsulated or full thermal configurations. The great thing about the Big Mouth is that the bottom hoop extends to give you an extra 3 square feet of fishing space, so it has been my go-to shelter this year. -Rod
MNCPRGUY
Any idea why Clam does not have the Big Mouth listed on their HSOforum? I like the idea of more space on the ice for me to set my anchors! Seriously, though, if you're fishing a deadstick alongside a jigging rod, some bulky boots, a Vex, and a small heater, a couple extra square feet of ice can make a big difference. I agree with extended poles not being a priority for this application, too. If I'm going to be planted in one spot for any length of time, I have my JM Thermal X and Bigfoot to stand up and move around in.
Jim Kusuda
The Big Mouth and Big Mouth Thermal are Gander Mountain exclusives this year. It looks like they are sold out now,
Tony Mariotti
Jim hit the nail on the head about the Big Mouth's. Gander Mt. has them exclusively right now. Like you, I have my JM thermal and a hub for any time I want to set up or set up and move short distances. The Scout or Pro TC have been nice for just a one man hole hopper, and the dark interior of those one man houses I like for site fishing by myself. The JM Pro would be my first choice typically, but since you all ready have a 2 man Mitchell house, I'd go with a darker fabric for my 1 man, just in case you are fishing shallower water. Even on Leech, once we closed up the hubs you could watch the fish hit in 11 ft.
GSP4ME
I have a jm oneman pro and love it 60 pounds but is so smooth to operate and the lights are slick. . I use the smallest heater and endup just in sweatshirt everytime. I wouldbuy one again in a heartbeat
MNCPRGUY
I love my JM Thermal X and wouldn't hesitate to buy the 1-man if I found one at a good price. That said, the lights, bait bucket, and battery holder would be out the window in a heartbeat. I love those features in my 2-man, but fishing by myself I'm pretty sure I can get by with a handheld Clam light and some plastics.
Valleye
I have The Base Camp Hub and The Scout. This is just fine for me and the kids. If and when I need a shelter which isn't alot I will want something that I can fit in and is quick to set up and break down. Initially I had the Scout and thought I needed more room, so i got the Pro. I liked the configuration and more space. However I really did not like the extending poles to the point that I sold it and bought a Scout again. I'm not very tall and the Scout suits me fine. The only time I use shelters is to remove myself from the elements (Rain and/or Wind)or sight fish. Warmth should be provided by adequate clothing/boots and a small heater. Luckily I have not fished in any shelter this season. Was there times I wished I had a shelter? Hell Yes, But Mobility is king for me and sitting on a bucket is sufficient. When I have the little ones The Base Camp serves as a place to eat and play with the electronics. Most of the time we will be riding the ATV and making Angels. My pick is the Scout for ease in mobility. Hope this helps!
Kevan Paul
I love the hubs also. But my favorite one man would be a pro. I like the wider stance that the pro's offer.
WallyGader
Pro is the perfect size if you ask me, dont know why speading the poles one time is such a big deal.
dairyman
you obviously didn't get one with sticking poles-------your lucky
dan z
What 1 man has the mist headroom without extension poles. I would like to beable to set the hook without slapping the ceiling. Or should I just use shorter rods?
Jim Kusuda
I got a set of Pro poles with the new Rapid Pole Slide Extreme system type extensions, but my regular system with clips work fine, so I haven't swapped them. I live pretty far way in Madison, but if you are ever over this way, let me know.
Jim Kusuda
My old tournament partner has a Kodiak, which he can stand up in. He isn't real tall but he really likes the extra room.
Crappyfisherman
I have the Pro and after reworking the poles they slid very easy.I rounded the edges on the end of each pole so they don't cut into each other and ran a 12 ga. shot gun cleaning rod with the brass brush on a cordless drill up the tubes to clean them out, them spray with silicon. The flat edge of the tubes is what makes them stick.
