Lake Superior - Brown Bonanza

We have been hard at it here on Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior, mainly targeting near shore Trout, such as the Brown. We also see Splake (a cross between a Lake Trout and Brook Trout), Steelhead, Salmon species, Lakers and an occasion Brookie. All these fish can be extremely aggressive and its what makes them fun to fish for - watching a mark come on your Vexilar screen that looks like it has afterburners on it as it comes so fast to overtake your lure, is what its all about. But, on the other hand, they can be extremely finicky and can test your patience, another reason they are fun to fish for. And as a guide, its always fun to see what presentation it takes to trip a fishes trigger on any given day and to watch someone have pure excitement as these hard chargers rip drag, run after run!

This season, the Brown, has been king of the bay. Thanks much to a great stocking program by our DNR, and a great boom in our bait fish population, these fish are really taking off the past few years. The fishing has always been ok, but, we are seeing way better numbers of fish contacted each and everyday.

Lately, tripping their trigger, has been using common spoons like Buckshots, Macho Minnows, Pimples, and the alike. Seeing them on the screen shoot in, you have to be prepared, because they want the bait moving away. Reel, reel, reel and wait for slack in your line after they over take it. But, on days when they are really neutral, we downsize to Panfish tackle, typically a vertical jig with a waxie or two, and lighter line. Not much movement, but, you still want to slowly make them rise to take the bait. Either day, hold on, cause they make some great runs, and will test your nerves when you get them to the hole - head shaking back and forth, never wanting to come into the hole!
