Jim Hudson
Just got back from the big water of the north, where we were filming an upcoming episode of The Next Bite. Ice Team Pros Keith Kavajecz and Pete Maina were along on the trip, and we based out of Adrians Resort. First, gotta talk about the ice. Where most of the early season action is taking place, just outside of Pine Island, they have anywhere from 9 to 12 inches of ice. But, still some spots you need to use caution around. Good thing is, Brian Ney, owner of Adrians, really checks out the ice good, marking bad spots and keeps the traffic flowing well around the area on marked trails. Fishing wise, it was pretty good. Typical LOTW standards, lots of fish were caught, where most were in the under 20" range, allowing us to have some great fish fries during the evening! We did catch a few nicer fish, and the pattern on those fish was that they were higher in the water column. 10 to 15 feet off the bottom at times. Probably cruising, looking for shiners. Reel up to them and WHAMO! We moved in and out in the basin. Starting shallow in the morning and then deeper in the afternoon, which is also typical of LOTW. Spoons, straight gold when the sun was out, and Pink/Gold with glow during cloudy or low light. Dead rods had a white and pink knuckleball jig or a gold flyer jig. Keith and Pete stayed up to film an episode of Ice Team TV with Jason Mitchell and Jeff Andersen. Based on a report from my good friend, Tom, they went to fish a new area of the lake in hopes of the motherlode! Cant wait for that report! Hope everyone else is having some fun on the ice.
