Optimax Preventive Maintenance And Now Overheating

Mercury Optimax 115 hp, 2006.

I had water in lower unit so decided that I would get a seal kit installed and also replace impeller as long as the lower unit was being serviced.  Put it on the lake and got a high temp alarm.  Back to dealer and now they replaced thermostat, although dealer says they can't replicate alarm.  This time put muffs on it and alarm again.  I get a good telltale stream but not immediately.  There is some lag time and then it spits an sputters before a good flow. I sure think that it was immediate before the work.  So my question is did the dealer mess up on the impeller  or is something else going on?  This motor has never had a high temp alarm before.

Here's one on start up.  Seems to be pretty low water stream.  My 93' 75hp Merc pizz's a heavy stream of water out even at idle.

I wonder if the dealer got some dump stuck in the output tube when doing their work?

Suk's but if you didn't have over heating issues until you brought it to the Dealer. It needs to go back until they find the issue.

They may have to pull that lower unit back off and see what they screwed up when installing the impeller.

Hopefully their just not "shot gunning" the problem with parts because they can't find out what the problem is?  If it's under warranty I guess I wouldn't care if I don't have to pay and they get it fixed. If not they could run up a pretty big bill replacing the whole cooling system!

I hear you.  Is been awfully spendy for something that I didn't even need to do.  No labor on this last trip in. The base was badly corroded. I think the boat was run in salt water before I bought it. They thought cleaning it up would be sufficient.  Evidently the "cleaning" put it outside tolerances. No chance to run it yet, but they say they ran it at all ranges if the throttle for about an hour with good temps the whole time. I have fingers crossed.
