1995 Mercury 75 hp - motor lowers when in reverse

Since I've owned it (5 years) the motor will lower when it's in reverse.  It's got power tilt.  It kind of sucks because if I miss my trailer and have to back up to try it again it will often bury my prop into the mud.

So what should I be checking for?  I've read something about a reverse lock, but I'm not sure how to test it, where it's at, what commonly goes wrong with it.

The motor lifts just fine and stays up while going forward, so I don't think the hydraulic ram is going bad.

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forum.

Got the same motor. I know there is a Tilt lock but never heard of a reverse lock on it?  I'm thinking either you may be low of hydraulic fluid or have some wear play somewhere?

Bring it up then just start down. Stop and go lift up and down on it to see if there is play?

Is it being powered down electrically or is it drifting?  In reverse i would think it should lift the motor not let it settle.  I am thinking you have a short in the power trim circuit when reverse is engaged but i dont have any professional knowledge of your setup.

Like Blackhawk said, if the hydraulics were bad the motor would trim in when going forward.

In reverse the forces are to lift the outboard which is opposite of what your describing.   Go outside and(without the outboard running) shift into forward and reverse.

You of coarse shouldn't here the hear the trim motor running.

I haven't watched it to see if it is slowly going down or just slamming down.

When going forward it doesn't move.  Just in reverse the motor will drop down.

Okay, I plan on getting the boat out of the garage this weekend for the summer and I'll check it.

When I first googled this problem a year ago it seemed like being low on hydraulic fluid or the ram needing to be rebuilt were the popular advices given.

Thanks for everyone's help.
