Another year messed up

Another year messed up because of my own stupidity again.
Last year my older lab got caught on a sharp piece that was sticking out from the kennel fence and ripped her hide open about 12", got stitches and had to wear a lamp shade for about 2 months this happened right during hunting season, and somthing I could have prevented from happening by makeing sure the dogs kennel was safe before, and not after.
Now today, I was out working with my younger lab, decided to move the truck a little ways down the road, figured she would be fine following me a short ways. Well I guess she either was nervous I was leaving her there, or saw something on the road that interested her and got underneath the truck and I ran her over, I cant believe I ran her over, the feeling of the bump, bump, and the squeeling is haunting me. I just cant believe it, I need a good swift kick in the head.
It was on softer ground so it wasn't as bad a s it could have been, she has a fracture in her front left shoulder area, and will have to be kenneled for atleast 2 months now, only to come out for food water, bathroom.
Looks like I will be takeing the other dog hunting, but she has been a major challenge for me, and I am almost thinking of just skipping pheasant season al together.

I am very sorry this happened to you and the dog, it seems that the dog was lucky though and at least there's a silver lining.

I would take the older dog out and just get into the field. Just enjoy the walking and time with the dog.

I hope the younger dog recovers very quickly for you.

That is terrible news, but it could have been a lot worse.

Last night I got a call from my buddy who has the best lab that I have ever hunted with, including my own. He came home last night after his wife and he ran to the grocery store for about 15 minutes and his dog was laying in middle of his yard. He was just laying there and not moving at all. He did not seem to really be in any pain, but her only layed there and would not let my buddy even pet him. He was getting the vet to come out to his house this morning to sedate the dog and bring him in for an exam. I haven't heard the outcome. All he can figure is his dog must have ran out in the road and got hit or something. They live out in the country and the dog is always within 100 ft of their house and their driveway is about a mile from their home. We'll see what the vet finds out.

I can only imagine the mental pain you must be going through. It must be pretty tuff. Hang in there. I'm sure the dog has already forgave you. One lick on the face and it will prove it to you.

I'm sorry to hear about your dogs. It seems like those things you think 'what if' about seem to come true in your situation. The one saving grace is that their still both with you. I'm with Ole, go enjoy the time out in the field with the older dog. Bagging the game is only a small portion of the experience.

As of last night, it's looking like I may be dogless for a while too. My GSP ended up with a mast cell tumor on her right hind quarters about 4-5 weeks ago and had surgery about 3.5 weeks ago to remove it. She healed up very well and has been great til the last couple nights, she's been yelping and very sensitive about the surgery area. She can't seem to [PoorWordUsage], and tries to nip or bite at the area of her scar. She's going in to the vet at 11:30 this morning, but my 'educated' guess is that she won't be going anywhere this weekend. I'm still gonna try and get out with my son around Hutchinson anyway. I just hope this isn't a recurrence of her tumor again... :

thanks folks, I shouldn't make it sound like my other lab is so old, shes only 3, but I have put alot of time in with her , but once out in the filed, her ears are plugged, she is a VERY hyper, scatter brained dog, so I figured I would put my time in with my younger one that seems to listen better. BUT, I will take the older one out, because she does love to go, but I btter keep the check cord on her.

Its hard to see them in pain, and when you can tell their in pain, you know they REALLY must be hurten because them dang dogs can sure take alot it seems.
The doc. showed me the X-rays, and she has a fracture in her right fron scapula, its gonna be tough to keep her mellow, today when I take her out for bathroom, she looks like she wants to try an run around the yard, I imagine the pain killers are working.
I went back to the area where it happened, and notice there were sugar beets here and there on the edge of the road, I would imagine she may have thought it was the pheasant dummy, or just got too curious, but it will definetly be the last time I decide to drive the truck down the road without her in it. I can still feel the thump, thump,.
There were alot of things raceing through my head, like should I put her out, to stop the pain, I thought she was done for, because she looked all mangled up, I thought for sure her innerds were crushed,, hard to believe just a small frature.
O.K. I'lll quit talking about it, HEH.
Funny how these creatures grow on you like your own little kid.

Like a kid you say? Yeah...I know what you mean.

It ain't lookin' good, guys. Vet says she's either got another major mast tumor on her back lymph nodes which has just developed over the last week (since her last vet visit), or it's a cancerous tumor on her lymph nodes. Either way, it's bad. The tumor is so large it's blocked her colon off and she can't go to the bathroom. Lots of meds to get the swelling down now.

Man, this has really got me down today. You're right, Dano, she's a lot like a kid to me. We got her 6 mos. after my daughter was born. That was 6.5 years ago.

sorry too hear about your dog! stuff happens! big milt at work had to put both his brittneys down and his wifes poodle because a skunk got in the kennel and had a fight with the dogs and all were tested positive. well at least you still have a dog. by the way you wont need a dog where we hunt tons of birds call me for details.

Sorry to hear about the dogs guys. I know it can be tough to lose one of the family. I had to put down a dog that was hit by a car about 3 years ago. It was one of the hardest things I ever did, a lot harder then I thought it would be. Be thankful for the dogs that are still with you and enjoy your time with them.
