Where did the squirrels go??

Okay I wasnt sure where to post this so I did it here. I was wondering if anybody knew of some land where I could get into some squirrels? I tried the opener down in Winona and only one squirrel to show for about 16 hrs of hunting. Most people didnt do very well. So if you know where the squirrels went then let me know. thanks.

They probably didn't go anywhere, it was too windy last weekend. Squirrel hunting in my experience it terrible when it's windy, say 15-20 mph & up. I just saw one a few minutes ago running along the road out my office window. Do you want me to shoot him for you? Just being stupid.

I have tons of them in the yard and would love to get rid of them. Problem is the location, kind of. In town is just not conducive to the big guns. A pellet rifle would be the trick. I see about 10-12 at a time inthe yard and they are pretty docile as long as the dog is not out.

Now matter what woods you're in. All you need to do is sit in a treestand, wear either blaze or full camo, and have a Bow in hand and you will see more squirrels then you can count. Sorry I know this didn't really help ya, but had to vent.

Now on a helpful note, I've seen them, in the remote area's of Carlos Avery. All while bow hunting. Most squirrels hunter don't travel to far into the woods. I'd say under a 1/2 mile on average. While bow hunter venture into the 1-2mile range. Stop and Stalk is the way to go about it. When you stop make sure for at least 10mins per spot.

I'd have to agree with Mr Special. Find an old rifle stand and sit. I walked with my boys all morning not seeing a thing. I finally sat us all down near a big old oak and sure enough there pops out a squirrel.

Thanks for the info guys. Im going to try this sitting thing and see if they pop out. These squirrels in the woods are alot smarter than the ones in my yard.
Can you point my to some public parking areas on carlos avery? Hopefully the squirrels there will be like the ones in my front yard.

There are tons of places to park. Some are right on the side of the road some others are in parking areas. I would recommend calling the Carlos Avery office or DNR I think they have a map or something. But out of all the spots, I think the south end receives less pressure for squirrel hunting. Most people are down there bow and waterfowl hunting. Be extra careful this weekend cause it's waterfowl opener and there will be tons of guns out there.

Heck now I might even wanna go versus fishing. I tell ya darn choices

Find a woods by a cornfield, you'll have all the squirrels running around you want. Most people don't care about them, you'd probably be able to get permission on private land.
