winterizing an inboard

A friend has a Bayliner inboard and we were talking about winterizing it.  He is taking it in to have it done but I was wondering if it could be a DIY.  I don't know what motor is in it but I am curious about what the steps would be.

Tom, it's fairly easy to do, not much different than an outboard. Be basically the same for the Mercruiser or the Volvo engine, I did my brother-in-laws often. This is a simple vid that shows the basics. Only other things I would do is dump in Startron fuel treatment instead of Stabil, and do it  the lake on your last run, as I don't like extended running on muffs. Also dump your lower unit, drain and refill, and you can also pull your outdrive and lube the shaft and seals if you want. Pull the prop and grease the shaft. Pull the batts and electronics, leave all hatches open, throw in some dryer sheets, and put the cover on. I'm anal enough I also like to pull each spark plug after doing the engine carb fog and fog each cylinder, too, even tough that's not really necessary. Lube your carb linkage, too. Take your time, and it goes well and saves ya a LOT of jing. Good luck! :)

  Treat the fuel with a stabilizer, run the engine till that gets to the carb and then fog through the carb till the engine stalls.  

Drain the oil while engine is warm and change oil filter. Fill with oil. 

Change fuel/water separator.  Change fuel filter(s)

Drain the exhaust manifold and block. On a V-8 and 6  you'll have the drains on both sides.    A straight 6 or 4 just the one side.  Look for a brass plug on the bottom of the exhaust manifold and a petcock or plug on the side of the block.   Replace and close petcocks.  You can remove a hose and fill with antifreeze if you wish.  Its not to protect from freezing, rather to protect from rusting.

Drain the lower unit.  If you find water you'll need find out where its coming from.

Remove the upper drive and grease the splined driveshaft.  Inspect and grease the u-joints   At this time you inspect for water intrusion from a bad bellows or oil from a bad seal.

Replace and fill lower unit.

Write a note and stick it in the boat stating you've done the above so next Spring your not guessing.

Once the boat is at its storage area, lower the drive and remove the batteries.
