mass air flow sensor

Recommended Posts

Check engine light came on and the codes indicate that cylinder #3 is misfiring due to a bad mass air flow sensor.  Doesn't look like a big deal on the 2002 F150, but I am wondering why #3 would be the one misfiring.  Can someone explain that to me?

Thanks for your time.

what is the code?

MAF does not generally cause one cylinder to misfire. typically they will run both banks lean or rich and set P0171/P0172 depending on how they go. There can also be a noticeable difference in performance. Especially when they go lean. You will typically experiences a general lack of acceleration.

On a 5.4 liter I would be pulling the coil and checking for spark with an adjustable air gap spark tester. Should see at least 1/2 to 3/4 inch of spark coming out of the coil.
