Scott Steil
I would like to hear some feedback from you guys/gals running GWH's. Positive and Negative comments please. I would also be interested in hearing about other aspects besides hunting, although my main interest is the hunting. Please don't turn this into a debate as to which hunting dog is the best.ThanksScott Steil
Flood the Rink
I currently own a 3 year old GWP female. Since my dog stays in the house I don't get the shedding or coat issues from the previous poster. As far as hunting is concerned she goes all day, all week, all month. the flip side is she needs a lot of exercise to burn that energy off.Mine runs big, very big which has been an issue trying to keep her close without ruinning her boldness. My brother used to breed his wirehairs and owns the best dog I've ever hunted over. Holds points, retreives everything, good for upland and waterfowl. Mine is not aggresive and is great with my newborn and anyone she meets.
greenman
I have a two year old GWH. Great dog. Loyal to a fault. Easy to train. Highly intellegent. Good nose. Aims to please.Sheds very little. If you get a GWH make sure to do plenty of socialization with people, kids and other dogs. Mine is great with all the above. She will submit to a Yorkie but will not hesitate to kill rabbits or squirrels. The breeder I got her from is listed below. He specializes in GWH's that hunt but biddable to make them a better house dog.http://www.vomgrafenauer.itgo.com/
Wayne Ek
Scott, I've run GWP for the past 20 years. Before that it was Brit's. During that time I've had 5 wirehairs and 1 griffon. The neg.part first.1. All of them have shed alot.2. Two had problems with blowing their winter coat.3. One (a female) was extremely dog aggressive. Now the good points. All of them had better than average intelligence. Two had superior noses, 4 had average capabilities. All were easy to train and very biddable. 5 were great water dogs, 1 was not that crazy about the water. All six hunted slow and close, the griffon pointed behind me as much as infront of me. I've never had one that hunted full days past the age of 10. All made great house dogs, but most of the time they are in their own kennels. My current wirehair is 9 now and I'm going to look at a 2 year old this week, as Kilo can only be hunted on half day hunts. If your looking to run wirehairs, be advised they point everything. Mine have pointed deer to porkies and just about anything in-between.------------------WayneAgape Fishing Guideswww.agapefishingguides.com
