Earlier this summer I had my oil reservoir tank replaced. Since then my motor has been difficult to start. It fires right away and then dies, to get it started I need to keep priming it to keep it running until it warms up. during the start up process the motor misfires and smokes terribly! Once it warms up it seems to be running better. My question is: is it possible with the new oil tank, I am getting to much oil in my gas/oil mixture or is it just a coincidence? Thanks!!

Unless someone messed with the oil pump, no you are not getting too much oil. And, if you were, you would get too much ALL the time. Since it gets better as it warms up, very doubtful.

I would be more willing to say that whoever changed the tank also may have tweaked the idle mixture screws

Boatfixer, thanks for the response! After it warms up the motor will restart with no problem and seems to run ok. At wot throttle I am pulling about 5000 rpm, do you know if that is normal, seems a little low to me-but I am not a boatfixer!!

Max RPM is 5500 on that motor.  The fact that you are only hitting 5000 RPM could be due to propping though, unless you're confident you were reaching 5500 RPM in the past.  Can you elaborate on your "have to keep priming it" comment?  Are you physically squeezing the primer bulb, or are you pushing the choke key in to choke it to keep it running until it's warmed up?

Interesting. Would that be standard operating procedure for a marine mechanic to readjust the idle mixture screws, when replacing the oil reservoir and fuel filter?

Is there 1 for each carb? How hard to readjust? Can the average joe put the muffs on and do this?
