Brittanys?

Recommended Posts

I've had four Britt's over the last twenty years. I don't claim to be a great trainer or anything, but here's what I know:
They are a GREAT house dog, although they shed a lot.
They are tenacious hunters, but a couple I've had were kind of independant, and liked to get too far ahead.
They're great around kids, love attention and are very affectionate.
They aren't too wild about water, but will do anything to get a bird.
They will work in the thickest cover you can imagine.
All of mine have been great car dogs too, usually sleeping the whole time.
They know when you've missed a shot they pointed, and will look upon you with disgust. blush.gif
Sorry, I don't know of any breeders, I got mine in Wisconsin, and they retired.

I have a 7 year old Brit from Double D Brittany's in Monticello--she's everything mentioned in the above post to a "T".

I also have a GSP, 4 years old and ten times the better hunter. GSP's smell the air and are much better scent locators. Also, my GSP will retrieve a Duck from water. She works better in tight "Grousy" cover too.

Also, the GSP never needs burrs, or mud removed from her hair at the end of each hunt, Britts are really a pain to keep clean.

My next one will be another GSP...

I'm running gwp (wirehairs) now and have for the last 6 dogs. I've run brit's 3 times and was happy with all 3 dogs. They are great hunters and double as a great house dog. All my brit's did water retrieves but I had to work with them to get there... Two of the dogs worked very close, and one had a ranging problem. While I like the wirehairs, I will probably run a brit again.

I'm sure there are 100 different opinions on this issue, but I have had 2 brits and am working with my 3rd. All have been great as mentioned as hunters and house dogs. The 3 dogs have all been close workers when compared to the gsh I have hunted with. Like I saud many different opinions out there. The maverick lines have been really good to me.

We have two Brittanys, both wonderful dogs. One is nine yrs old the other two. Great family dogs & they
love to hunt. The older one is a jekyl/hyde -
very small and shy, but if there is a crippled rooster on the run, look out! She hasn't lost one yet.The younger one came from Double D Brittanys in Monticello and that is definately where the next one will come from.

Folks,

Thanks for the great feedback. We're getting a 12 week old male pup this friday from County Line Kennels in Ellendale. I'm REALLY looking forward to this. He'll mostly be a companion dog but I'll probably train him to hunt for my occasional pheasant outing. For certain he'll be one kick-butt frisbee dog! smile.gif

Cheers!
