J Rookie K
My wife and I were talking about this pointer thing, and she wanted a GSP. Well I was doing some research and then low and behold I find this GWP. I wanted the GWP. And so I called the breeder that this guy told me about. Turns out his dogs were just what I was looking for, slower, close range, and larger sized. He had 1 pup left. After work I figured Id check him out. My boy's B-Day is next Sat, and he wants a puppy. Its a week early, but I couldnt hide Barron that long. That look an his face today was worth a million bucks. Now its time to get to work on this pup. I will have lots of ?s, only one now. What a good book for training this pointer? Thanks for any info. J Rookie K
BDR
"speed training your bird dog" I think that is the name I found it helpful. There are a lot of books at the county libraries. I read almost every book I found. I took a little from all that I understood and went from there. My first GSP was very easy to train,or did he train me?, When he was 3 I got a second GSP and the training seemed to go at half speed. Guess they are all different. Also think about if you want to run trials, as the training can be quite different than what I find needed in the real field. For me I just had to bring out his natrual instincts and do a little polishing. He is a natrual "killer" retriever,to hand or feet I don't care, so I didn't have to spend much time on that. He isn't the most "classy" hunter but we get as many birds as most, if I can do my part with the gun. Have fun!!
setterguy
The best training book I have ever read is "Do it right, do it yourself" by Les Jenkins. The only thing is, it is hard to find. I had such a hard time finding it for a friend that I called the author, he told me that he is going to be putting out another edition with a few updates very shorlty. Sometimes you can find one on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.com. I have a copy somewhere in my office let me know if you can't find one.
