Went for a drive north of Detroit Lakes and found a pail full each of wild plums, hawthorn berries, and high bush cranberries.  Today, heading south to looks for wild grapes and 'shrooms.

Nice!!! Is the Hawthorne berry from a bush or a tree....or a bush form of the tree...  or separate species from the tree? Make jam out of them and the viburnum? Can't say I have ever seen either round these parts.....

I use Wild Berries & Fruits Field Guide by Teresa Marrone.  Once I found out what these berries were, I've started seeing a lot of them from Maplewood State Park to north of Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge.  It is different from the type used in landscaping.  It is a tree, my berries came off a tree that was maybe 15-18 feet tall.  I'd have to say, not my favorite jelly.  There wasn't a lot of flavor from the berries.  They look like mini apples inside.  Supposed to taste a little like pears.  Recipe called for lemon juice, I used lime and that might have been too overbearing for the berries flavor.

Huh.....am going to have to do some research on them. Almost kinda sounds  like rose hips, but for me.....anything different is always fun. Looks like a great weekend in the woods, and very cool you got to spend it with your dad! Have "fun" cleaning all those grapes
