Public lands

Recommended Posts

I was looking for some public land to hunt pheasant, rabbit, or grouse within an hour of the cities. Any one know of any? Our pup is new to the hunt this year(was born last labor day) and I want to get him some action besides the little time we get up at the cabin, any ideas? Thanks

There are some WMAs near Princeton that have produced all the above mentioned for me. I don't hunt rabbits but I'm sure they are there. There aren't too many spots that will produce grouse and pheasant and if they do they get pounded quite a bit. Buy a map of public lands of the state. Every weekend just pick one out and drive to it, can't tell you how many birds I have gotten hunting this way. You learn a lot in the process as well.

The DNR office in St Paul has a free fold out map of the entire state. Not very detailed but it does list them. They also have very detailed maps of smaller areas for sale.

There's a sportsmans atlas (I forget the exact name) that's pretty detailed, shows the roads that border the WMAs. It runs about $20. Most sporting good stores carry them.
