Female lab urinary incontinence

Kettle

Recommended Posts

I have a 8 year old female lab, very active and energetic for her age. Acts and looks like a 4-5 year old dog. She developed urinary incontinence several months ago. Only happens when she sleeps and not every night, currently have her sleeping on a dog pad with several towels on it.

Had her checked for urinary tract infection and she was negative, they still ran her on antibiotics with no help. Vet suggested hormones but upon reading a lot on the subject many dog owners have had minimal results. Read about Prion a medication they often used but has dexometaphine in it so the FDA took it off the human market and have read many people using it on their dogs and the dogs having very outward odd behavior.

She is a spayed dog, I switched her to a grain free diet as well with no results (that is some expensive dog food!!! She has a beautiful coat though from it.) Has anyone tried cranberry capsules or any other form of treatment?

She would literately drink water till she vomits if I let her, had her checked for diabetes as well which was negative. Any suggestions for my pup REMMY or for myself would be greatly appreciated!

Orion,

Thank you for your input, just like every-other dog owner I always need reassurance before I start medicating my dog. I am going to keep doing research and meet with the vet next week.

Thank you,

This is not uncommon in spayed dogs. I had a female gsp with the same issue. Estrogen hormone supplementation is the answer. Her bladder muscle has lost it's tone to shut off the flow. As soon as I had my dog on estrogen the problem went away. It doesn't take much hormone to correct the issue so I wouldn't worry too much.

Well my dog has been on Estridol (hormone replacement) for 6 days now. Vet told me to dose her every day for 5 days then every other day and eventually every 3 days. Still peeing what seems like liters in her sleep and I always let her out right before bed time and as soon as I wake up which is about 6 hours. Going to give it a few weeks before I jump to any conclusions.

The typical time of the day where I last give her water is around 530-6 and after that she still goes to the bathroom outside and somehow finds more to let go when she is sleeping. I'm going to give it a few more weeks on the estridol and if I see no relief I will switch her to proin
