Gopher Women

Well, they did it! Knocked off #5 Ohio State in OT at the Barn.Whether or not that's enough to get them into the NCAA's remains to be seen. Certainly can't hurt. Winning a game in the Big 10 tournament would put them at 20 wins. Live streamed the contest and it was exciting to watch.

Great game against Ohio State. Our big( Edwards is starting to come around) will really help open it up for Banham and Wagner. A win today against Maryland would be huge and give them a 2 game bye for the Big 10 tourney.Great fun to watch this team and Banham put up 80-100 points per game. Go Girls  DrJ....

We have a men's BB team at the U? Coulda fooled me. Looks like IM ball. I played that and I was a wrestler! Thanks Norwood, ya tool!

Ah what might've been. First lose your inside game to the pro's, then play a 4 guard offense against taller, sometimes more athletic teams along with having an off game shooting and the other team getting hot and suddenly you become very average some nights, even with Rachel Banham. South Dakota was no slouch either. Looking at their record and who they played last week with a season ticket holder, we were both convinced that MN would need to play their best to win. Was not a surprise to us anyway and congrats to SD.

The Gopher women overachieved much of the season. No one would've guessed they'd perform as well as they did. That they were in the top half of the Big 10 with Zahui gone and the unknown of Rachel Banham's recovery is pretty amazing. With the addition of Fernstrom, the IA St. transfer, Barne's knee recovering more fully from ACL surgery, Carlie Wagner quietly scoring her 1000th point, along with what promises to be more team speed and balance, should be interesting to see what Stollings' team is made of for the '16 - '17 season.

You could easily argue that USD should have got an at large bid to the NCAA tournament despite not winning the Summit tourney to get the automatic bid like SDSU did. USD beat SDSU twice this year and I would say they deserved a bid.

SDSU  as a #12 seed beat #5 seeded Miami in their first round game on Saturday and plays Standford tonight. Lots of girls from Minnesota on that SDSU roster :)

We saw that they had beat SDSU twice and figured the automatic bid was the only reason SDSU was in the tournament. A couple Big 10 teams got in with lesser records and probably weaker schedules. Good luck to both SD teams!

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
