How much ice ???

Depends on ice and your comfort level.

Last year I had my custom built wheel house and 1/2 ton Ram out on 14" of ice up on Red. The house weighs 8400lbs and I would guess all together with truck, 15000lbs.

I don't think I will ever do it again but I will go comfortably out on 16" with my set up.

I would think you would be safe in the 12" range very easily.

Others on here will have their own opinions. I know I've seen on these forums that some people won't drive their 1/2 tons out unless there is 18" plus.

I think you might be surprised how much it weighs… my 8x12 v front all aluminum frame/studs foam cedar … with 60 lbs propane, battery all gear etc is almost 3000lbs.

definitely let us know what the scale says..

I would not trust the ice just because we had a 2 days of cold. Remember the ice we had was exposed to 50 degree weather and that weakened it. Seeing you house is so light why not bring it out with a wheeler. I have been finding thin spots like 7 inches before it got cold and up to 11 inches. I am worried that this 2 day cold snap will make people start driving out. I like to have 18 inches before my truck hits the ice because there is always thin spots and that gives me a couple inches of wiggle room.

Those thinner spots will catch up to the thicker areas over time, the amount of ice gained is relative to the starting thickness of the ice for any given day. The thicker the ice, the less ice is formed, while thinner ice gains more in that same day.

Then you have to take into effect snow cover etc as well.

I'm sure you'll see people driving out this coming weekend on metro lakes, and someone is bound to go through.

I'm going to weigh mine this week. Thinking it will be around 2500pounds. Its all aluminum studded and covered too! Strofoam insulation and tounge and groove cedar inside.

You better get it weighed. I an unfinised ALL alumininum Yetti is 2250lbs. If yours only weighs 250lbs more you better start building them full time!

My home built 8.5x16 with a very sturdy hydraulic frame, full kitchen, bath running water, queen and twin bed 80lbs of propane and battery is 5740lbs on the scale ready to fish.

I take mine out behind the wheeler on 12" had it behind the Super Duty on Red on 14" and was nervous all weekend. It put 1" of water on top of the ice until we unhooked the pickup and moved it away 20yds, then the water went back down. I would much rather have 16" with the truck.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
