offset garage door opener

There is a hatch up to the attic with a set of stairs in the garage. That means the garage door opener won't work if it is placed in the center of the door. Can an opener be offset from the center, maybe a couple of feet? Any other alternatives come to mind?

Thanks for your time.

Any option to move the attic access?
Not without a whole lot more work than it is worth. If it were my garage I would give some thought to losing the stairs and just leaving a hole. How often do you go up there anyhow? It has a low ceiling and not all that much room.

Likely the hole in the ceiling is breaking the firewall and should be sealed up. Might want to put that thought into the owner's ear.

It is an unattached 60+ year old garage that doesn't have any rock in it at all. If it burns it burns. Previous owner put what looks to be 3/8 plywood on the roof and walls which now looks terrible and makes it impossible to figure out the mess with the electric.

The fool contractor was wrong. There is enough room for a standard opener and that will be installed shortly. I checked out the side mounted ones and I see that they are very expensive.

So the problem is solved.

Thanks for your time and responses.
