David Anderson
Getting the Salem ready to go, it had been sitting on concrete blocks to keep the tires off the dirt. Decided to remove them before the ground freezes and replace with plywood for the winter. Hooked it up and backed up a foot before it stopped. Nothing blocking so pulled forward and a foot later the same thing. figuring the shoes must have rusted to the drums I gave it a yank but the wheels held fast. The message on my dash said Service Trailer Brakes....great, it's raining and I don't have time. Pulled it 10 feet ahead and using the electric jack blocked it up and raised the wheel off the ground. Took off the rim, pulled the bearing (fell in the mud), and removed the drum. Brakes looked great, put rim back on and noticed a click. Still didn't turn. Took the drum back off and something seemed weird, the magnet had power to it and it was not hooked up to the truck. First though was there had to be a short somewhere back feeding power to the brakes. Deciding to look up front, the breakaway switch cable was missing. I crawled under the house and there it was, wrapped around the tongue jack blocks, must have pulled out when I first backed up. Plugged it back in and problem solved other than instead of looking there first I created an hour's worth of work in the dark rain. The good news is at least I know the breakaway switch works. Hopefully I remember this the next time!
icehole10
I think we have all been there!! Overlook the obvious, and create more work than needed. I guess the good news is it was an easy fix!!
