TylerS
If anything, this thread and others like it prove everyone is too wound tight and needs to get out waterfowl hunting more. Doctor's orders
Ufatz
Aha! Tyler has noticed it too! Grim faced, tight lipped take-no-prisoners mind set is shortening a bunch of lives around here. You ain't gonna get out of this alive fellas, so take it all with a light touch and consider the possibility that you CAN live with other guys with other ideas. And I learned a long time ago that not everybody is gonna like ya and not everybody who smiles at you is your friend.Good for you Tyler. You get my GOOD THOUGHT award for today.
mallardnwalleye
I'm with ya Ufatz.Lots of poor shooters out there. No shame in it. I remember one opener with my brother on slough/lake. I must have heard 200+ shots from down the slough where 8 other parties were. I filled out my six with 10 shots and my brother took longer but finished in a couple of hours. When we got back to the landing the CO was checking people and writing down how many of what were shot. I asked "How many limits?" He then said with a puzzled look "None". I asked "how many did people get"- he said "0 or 1 and you're the first over 1 bird". I couldn't believe it but that is the truth. 1. Most people shoot at birds too far away.2. Most people should use an IC choke.3. Most people should pattern their gun.I once thought my barrel was bent because it put almost all the pattern low and to the left. WRONG! My buddies step dad was a gun store owner and recommended patterning with a different brand shell. After the switch It was dead on and fairly well distributed. No shame in being a poor shot, as I like to say-There are many duck hunters, some are good, a few are great. But there is only one "you". Take what you want from the sport and leave the rest.
Ufatz
Shoot more. Pattern the load you are going to use. Shoot some more. And learn how to know when a bird is in range. We have a family member who is a normally bright and useful human being, kind to dogs and other people, moderate drinker and patriotic American but he CANNOT discern when a duck is thirty yards away or a quarter mile away!! LOLA hand trap and a case of clay birds on a sunny afternoon can help a guy become a little better shot. If you are fortunate enough to be able to shoot some trap or skeet or sporting clays you will become a MUCH better shooter.
