Just posted up a few minutes after this about the puffies..... looks like we are on the same plane of existence today....don't know who will be affected worse grin

As mentioned, mine were pretty durn good this year. Made chicken puffball dumpling soup on sat. Yesterday, similarly used them as a noki substitute. To do so just ripped off small chunks, squeezed/formed them, fried up in olive oil till soft....and added to the dish. Got the idea from one of Stick's hippy chick friends.

In the past would egg wash, crumb batter, fry, and top with any type of bruschetta type topping. Sticks friend also mentioned puff ball eggs benedict and going to try that....would start as above and top with ham, eggs and sauce. Ultimately, just use them as you would any mushroom....except dont eat fresh.

Oh, as far as how big....before they start to turn yellow inside....how long is that? Before they get yellow smile Have noticed mine , from the same spot, seem to grow about the same size each year. Some will be huge, while others, not much bigger than a softball...never growing bigger. Since they are in your yard, and can see them often.... when they seem to stop growing would nab them.

cool and thanks, I really like to fry up the shrooms from the store in some olive oil and butter with onions and sweet peppers and then have it with red meat. one is about softball size and I did not see any of these last week. maybe for supper with a blade steak.

Apparently you have not mowed in a while for something like that just to "show" up...lol. Cut it open and see if it started turning yellow. I always cut the "bark" off as well. As far as taste, am just as curious. As mentioned in the other thread the one I picked sat. was good....in the past have always tried a few and were not this good.

Tried slicing & dehydrating a few years ago and for me, I didn't like the result at all. Ended up tossing them. Same with Chants, just something with the resulting texture that turns me off after dehydrating. But that is just probably me...? (-:

Depends on the mushroom, I think. I've never tried dehydrating a puffball. Chants get a bit tougher, but I'll soak them longer and cook them on lower heat. Hens rehydrate just fine, in my opinion, as do the trumpets, hedgies, kings, lobsters, and pinkies. Chickens I usually fry quick and freeze. Honeys get chewy if they're dehydrated/rehydrated...I like it, some don't.

All hericium and aborted entoloma are eaten while their hearts are still beating.
