97 60 HP Merc

My 60 HP Merc just clicked when I tried to start it the other day. I took the hood off and just tapped on the starter with my multi-tool. It started right up. I tried it multiple times. The starter just spins. I just tap it lightly and then it engages and starts right up. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

The starter is gummed up internally and the solenoid is having difficulty pushing the gear up to the flywheel. It is easy to fix, just remove, take it apart, lube correctly and re-assemble. You may need a special tool to re-assemble the unit (google the process). Or just take it to a dealer and have them do the repair.

I agree with hydro-gear not coming up and engaging flywheel. If the battery is up to snuff and this is happening ya gotta lube that thing or, as has been mentioned tear it down or have a mechanic do it. It is generally not a big deal either way.

Check the battery, connections, grounds including the ground strap and starter mounting bolts as well. As mentioned by others, the helical gear on the starter and the starter pinion gear can become dirty, dry and gummed up. Disconnect the battery and rotate the pinion gear up the shaft to clean it. I use electrical contact cleaner or brake parts cleaner to clean first before spraying a LIGHT amount of jb80.
