looking at buying a 2005 F150 with 177k

Recommended Posts

I found a 2005 F150 FX4 crew cab with 177k at a dealership for $9600 yesterday. It seems like a pretty good deal, has leather seats new tires and no rust. Does anyone here have experience with this year F150? Im curious how reliable they are at that many miles already. I would like to get another 75k out of it if i buy, is this truck known to last like the 01-03 models do? Thanks

I would look closer for rust. Look at the bottom side of the cab corners and inside the front fenders at the bottom when you open the front doors. I have an 05. Friends have 07 and 09 and all are rusting in the same spots. I have 100k on mine and i dont think i would by another one

I have an 06 with less than 60K and just replaced the right side exhaust manifold since it was warped. Starting to rust above the rear wheel wells too. It has been a decent truck but I don't think I would pay $10K for a 10 year old truck with close to 200K miles. There are better deals to be found.

I just sold my '05 F150 Lariat with 172,000 for $9500. That seems to be the going price. While I had it I replaced all 8 coil packs, spark plugs, both manifolds and had the cab corners done. I can't imagine that this work hasn't been done on the one you are looking at. Don't be afraid of it, just do your home work and be confident with what you buy. If you want rust buy a 05 Chevy or Dodge..

Every truck rusts. I'd say if you want a good deal and know what you're looking at look for one on hsolist for sale by owner not dealer. I have friends with fords and the only downside they've had are coils. Im more of a gm guy but they are all decent.

If you could verify that it had the kind of work into it like NIBOWMAN did then I'd consider it as that really is the going rate for used 4x4s, especially at the dealerships. We just traded off an '06 Expedition with the 5.4 and plenty of rust- glad to see it gone and still got $10k for it. We did 4 of 8 coil packs and a catalytic converter, got rid of it before the spark plug adventure. Just didn't trust that motor anymore after 4 different "fail safe mode" trips. But for full disclosure I did have to put a head on my '05 5.3 Silverado a couple years ago. And the rust is starting to show up now too. They all have issues, the trick is to find a "deal" and drive it into the ground. Or buy brand new!

I've got an 05 FX4 with about 120k on it. Here's an earlier thread I started

Ask the dealer if the cam phasers have been replaced, the other things that go are the lash adjusters/rocker arms and the timing chain tensioners. You'll know if these are bad because it'll sound like a diesel. Some dealerships get around this by adding heavy weight oil wink Not saying your dealership would ever do something like that...but some do.

So far I've done the following myself:

both cam phasers

all 24 lash adjusters and rocker arms

plugs (0 broken luckily)

coil packs

some other minor things.

If you're mechanically inclined and don't mind wrenchin...that's a good deal.

A dealer can show you a lot of money for a trade especially later in the year off sticker price when actually they are giving you a lot less than you may think. They don't pay retail for trades and stay in business. If you want retail price for your trade you will be looking at retail price for the new one. If you want a wholesale price on a new car you will get a wholesale price for your trade. Comes out about the same either way.

I was thinking we would be lucky to get $5k for the Expedition too. That was in June and we had already agreed on a price for a used vehicle from a friend who bought a new vehicle from that dealer so they just did the paperwork for us. We were going to sell it outright but I wanted to see what they would give us and we quickly settled on $10k. They listed it for $15k but I have no idea if they sold it. It was an Eddie Bauer with 85000 miles but like I said we were ready to send it down the road. Just confirms that used 4x4s are holding their value and yours might be worth more than you think to the right buyer. Dodge dealer just west of Wausau WI.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
