Heading to Mayo for a week, might as well fish. Any suggestions?

Hi guys!! I am going to be stuck in the Rochester area for about a week in August for some medical stuff. If I am stuck, I figured I better make the best of it and fish!! I am not familiar with the area and what type of fishing is available there. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any walleye fishing around there?

Thanks!!

Number one is trout on many streams not too far from Rochester.

Number two would be various streams with smallmouth bass etc, like Zumbro or Root. Zumbro runs through Rochester. Outlying areas probably better.

Number 3 would be carp in Zumbro in Rochester, for example behind the civic center. You could fish those between appointments. Walking distance from Mayo Clinic. Some pretty nice ones.

If you have a boat, it isn't far over to the Mississippi.

Walleye fishing= Missisippi. There are a few in Lake Zumbro but you may be hard pressed to catch them.

Most trout streams are 45-60 min. away.

If you need to stay closer because of time constrients the Zumbro River and Silver Lake right in town holds some fish that is quick and easy to get a fishing fix.

As Del mentioned, try the Root if you like catching bass. I just fished some good chunks of it last week/weekend, and while the water is still a little murky, the fish are still there. They run a bit smallish, but I suppose that depends on what you're used to. But there are definitely some nice fish in it, too. For best luck, get away from the easy access points by the roads/bridges.

Keep your eye out for fossils, too. There are some in that ol' driftless limestone.

The Root, which runs through Stewartville and on to Chatfield is a good smallie stream. This time of year you can wade it wet.

There is also a "lake" at foster arend park that has catfish and trout. And a fishing pier, or fish from shore.

Another that I forgot is the lake at Chester Woods park. That might take a Yak or canoe to fish. My buddy used to take his pro-v with the motor up and use the bow mount. Canoes and Kayaks are available for rent. (cash or check only) LM Bass, catfish, panfish.
