pre spawn bass

Was on a lake that had schools of smallies in the shallows, but would not hit anything presented them. Is this typical of pre-spawn bass? Never saw so many fish that wouldn't hit. Water temp was low 50's. In addition, I was in a shallow small stream off same lake that had a depression about 3 feet deep and 20 feet long loaded with largemouth that wouldn't hit anything. I went over them and they scattered out and when I passed thru they would go right back in the depression to stay out of the current. Never saw anything like that before.

Pre Spawn bass during bright sunny calm conditions are usually tough and very aware of boats(if you see them you ruined your best shot at getting bites). During times like that you have to back way off and go subtle stickbaits, twisters.... Best thing to do is take note of pre spawn staging areas and if the weather changes strong wind, clouds, rain, generally nasty conditions come back with spinnerbaits, rattlebaits, aggressive/fast stuff and you will clean up.

Good Luck
