Nissan 18 hp four stroke issues

SpitnArgueDuckClub*

Question

Just got the Jon boat out tonight for the first time and once in the water the pull rope seemed stuck. Checked the gear and shifted from F to N to R and back to N. The prop worked as it should in all positions, popped the hood off and the linkage looked good moving freely as can be clicking into the positions. I also checked the oil it is filled as it should be and looks brand new. Anyone ever see any issues with the recoil being stuck or sticking? I am going to take the recoil off this weekend and see if it is truly stuck. In the meantime thoughts and idea's welcome. Thanks Cal.

The pull starter rope comes out about four inches and stops, never engaging the motor. I am 99.9% sure the motor is fine (the last time we used it was last fall and it ran like a champ, absolutely no isuues) after that trip I brought the motor inside for the winter. My thought is that the pull starter / recoil is jammed. Just wondering if anyone has seen the same or similar issue. ***Update after posting the problem here I Googled it last night and found a guy in 2007 with the same issue and the recoil was his fix. I will try his fix and post the results. Thanks Cal.

There is a start in gear protection which is a linkage that locks the recoil if in gear.

That could have become stuck.

Thanks ST!!!!! I can also add that the Nissan Customer Service is great help as well. If you call their number 1-214-420-6440 (they are located in Dallas Tx) and a technician answers and helps with all of your questions.
