F-150 coil issue-2000

Recommended Posts

i have the dreaded COP issue on my 5.4 2000; its intermittent(when it does miss, its a when i accelerate to 50mph and after its warm, it goes away) has not thrown a code. I was curious if anyone has got a scanner to pick up on the bad coil even though its not throwing a check engine light?-i thought i heard somewhere some places have better scanners to pick up on this? I dont need to have it fixed right away, its more annoying then anything since it doesnt happen everytime, maybe something i get done sometime this summer.

yes the plugs have been changed about 20k miles ago and I dont want to check each coil as it looks like a PITA to get in there to check each one

Did you replace the boots when the plugs were done? At least one out of eight seldom last the life of 2 plug sets.

Also make sure your intake manifold isn't leaking coolant. The last four 5.4 "tune ups" for me were due to coolant down the plug holes.

A ford dealer can find the cylinder that is misfiring and have it fixed in a half hour.

As a ford tech our scan tool has a "power balance" mode that shows, in a line graph form, the relative power balance of all the cylinders. Makes quick diagnosis of this problem. Also it may be cheaper for you to purchase the coil ahead of time and give it to the service writer then to have the shop sell you the coil.

Also I will bet if you put your truck in reverse step on the brake pedal AND the gas pedal, the misfire will get very bad.

"Easy to install yourself" HA! i've done a early 90's chevy and that was easy, but this is stuffed with fuel/coolant lines, cant even fit a hand back by the firewall without taking the top half of the motor off!

i'll probably have them run a scan and bring it to a local shop for them to play with; thanks all

A 6 and 12" 1/4 drive extension, A quarter inch ratchet, and a 7mm short chrome swivel from either mac or snapon (craftsmen are to long to get the one under the fuel pressure regulator)is all that is needed to get the 8 bolts that hold the 8 coils in place. There is not a whole lot that needs to be removed besides the air snorkel. Everything pretty much stays where it is and you can easily work around it.

The aftermarket scan tools also will have a cylinder contribution test (snap on lists it under functional tests). Find the cylinder that is showing negative numbers and you found the culprit!

SK (the tool brand) will work too, about 15 bucks last time I had to replace mine.

Good to know. I believe the Cornwell and the Matco one will not work either. At one time we checked all the major tool guys swivels to see what ones worked and what ones did not. This was years ago so the designs may have changed. If I remember correctly the difference between the ones that worked and the ones that did not was the depth of the socket part of the swivel. The shallower the socket end the better the fit in the tighter I spaces.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
