15 hp yamaha 4 stroke trouble

hi so i got this motor it is new it wouldnt start good when it was cold on sat. and warm on sunday. when i finally was able to get it going it runs great are these cold blooded motors. i researched them before i bought it and couldnt find any problems. any way i brought it back to the dealer to fix they said because its not broke in yet it may be a little hard to start but i dont believe 20 minutes at a boat ramp is acceptable any way did i get a lemon or no everyone says they run so great but not getting a warm fuzzy feeling. hope they fix it. thanks

I'm not buying " it's not broke in yet"!!

Call them back and set up a time for someone to go through the start up procedure when it's cold, at the shop in a tank.

I would be on the phone with Yamaha. Manufacturers usually want those who own their products to be satisfied. The dealer's excuse is bogus. I bought a new 20 and had no problem at all and the 15 & 20 are built on the same block.

I guess I was bombed for putting a link to a possible answer in another forum. Here's part of the content:

This motor uses an enrichment system called Prime Start. There is an additional fuel passage that allows more fuel into the mixture for cold starts. After about 5 minutes of run time this passage is closed by a needle valve that is actuated by the charge coil voltage going through a heating coil. So it is not a choke as it does not restrict air like a choke plate, but it does increase the fuel to air mixture, similar result. Your issue is most likely that either the idle speed is too low or that the air/fuel mixture on the carb needs to be richer. The problem is that the EPA tells dealers that they are not supposed to touch the mixture screw and it is covered by a pressed in plug.

Don't twist the throttle, this only adds more air during a cold start. The motor may need a re-start or two, but once it gets a little warm you should be good to go. Otherwise, your dealer may be willing to adjust your carb for you, should be a simple enrichment and you're on your way.

thanks for the replies i called them this morning told them when there done i want them to show me how to start it. they havent finished it yet. talked to a new guy and said basically what cylinder said it needs a adjustment. i was nice about it but told them they better be done fast. i know there busy but when you buy new it better run my old 15 evinrude i traded ran better than this thanks i'll keep you posted

well got it back. they went through how to start it. they also said the idle was to low and adjusted. i will see how it goes now

Good luck, Mr. Pike! You deserve a break. I can relate to a lot of "adventures" you have had with your equipment. Your current one with the

Yamaha reminds me of my brother's. He has a 50hp 2stroke that was part of an Alumacrat pkg. His first all new boat, motor and trailer. That motor has been the worst cold start motor. Runs great when it finally starts and runs awhile. Yamaha and the dealer basically gave up on helping him, but an acquaintance gave him some new advice last Fall so we'll see. Frustrating, esp. when new.
